MOUNTAIN CHUTES CAMP

BIRDING
Experience Birdwatching Like Never Before
At Mountain Chutes Camp

We can put together trips, from "do-it-yourself" to fully guided including bird banding days, duck banding days, nature and wildlife walks, and pontoon boat trips on the Montreal River

We are also close to Casey Marsh and Hilliardton Marsh - Ducks Unlimited projects

Observe birds only inches away at our Bird Banding Facility. Study fieldmarks that are normally difficult to see in the field. Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers really do have a yellow wash on thier bellies - something that is seldom seen when the bird is found boring holes in trees. You rarely get a chance to see their bellies, and if you do, it is typically in poor light and are unable to make out any color at all.

Get great looks at the magnificent Great Gray Owl. Observe them in their natural habitat. Winter birdwatching offers many challenges, but it also offers many rewards! The Timiskaming area has boreal species that many birders in southern Ontario only wish they could find, without driving many hours in fridgid weather.

Experience the piercing glare of birds of prey. Compare similar species and hone your identification skills. Watch skilled bird banders carefully banding birds and recording vital statistics that help us to understand birds and their role in nature. Appreciate the formidable talons and bills of hawks and other birds of prey.

Bird feeders in the area yield many regular northern species, and some surprises!

There is lots of bird activity here in June and July, when birding is relatively quiet elsewhere. Many species nest in this area.

Bird Photo Quiz #2

Bird #1 Bird #2 Bird #3 Bird #4 Bird #5 Bird #6

Quite often birders do not always get to see an entire bird, or see it in good light. That it why it is important to know as many field marks as possible, in case you only get to see a part of the bird in question, or only a certain profile. In addition you should learn feeding habits, habitat, general size and shape, and any characteristic traits, such as the way it moves in the trees or the way it flies. Some of the species in this month's Bird Photo Quiz are easy to identify, and a few others are a little more difficult because, you either do not get to see all of the field marks, or at least not the more familiar ones.

Correctly identify species 1-6 above, and receive 10% off the cost of your reservation in one of our cottages, or just play to test your skills. We will be making this more challenging as we go along.
