Comments:

The Friends of Presqu'ile Park is a volunteer group of people who share a great love for Presqu'ile Provincial Park. Many Friends members live in the Presqu'ile area while others live far away and visit the park only on vacations. All these people have memories of special experiences at Presqu'ile and now want to give something back to the park.

The Friends operate as a cooperating association under agreement with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources - to enhance the educational, interpretive and scientific research programs at Presqu'ile Provincial Park. This is accomplished by developing and printing park related publications, funding projects to improve park facilities and hiring and supporting students conducting research at Presqu'ile. Funds are acquired through fund-raising activities such as the operation of a bookstore and gift shop and through special fund-raising events such as the "Christmas at Presqu'ile" Quality Arts and Crafts Show.

The Friends of Presqu'ile are coordinated by a volunteer Board of Directos who live in the Presqu'ile area and elsewhere in Ontario. The Friends are dedicated to helping Presqu'ile Park continue to offer "almost everything a park could offer".

At the moment, The Friends are fundraising to purchase the exhibits for the new, $600,000. Presqu'ile Lighthouse Interpretive Centre. The Friends have pledged to raise $250,000 for the Centre's dynamic exhibitory. The Friends are presently organizing and financially supporting the largest interpretive activity offered in Ontario's park system: The Presqu'ile Waterfowl Festival - to be held from April 5-7/96. (On March 29/96, there were 17,500 waterfowl from 24 species in the park!).

Since our establishment in 1988, the Friends of Presqu'ile have accomplished a great deal. These accomplishments range from the establishment of a successful Nature Shop to funding several research and resource management projects, including Sand Dune rehabilitation and Black and Common Tern habitat enhancement. The Friends have produced a variety of publications relating to the natural and cultural resources of Presqu'ile. this growing series includes the 440 page book, "Birds of Presqu'ile", bird and plant checklists and full-color specialty booklets like "The White-tailed Deer of Presqu'ile Park". Approximately twelve students of university and college level biology and environmental science courses have been hired each year to support interpretive and research activities at Presqu'ile through grants applied for by The Friends of Presqu'ile Park. We also operate the park woodlot concession during the summer months.

All Friends members are entitled to a 15% discount on all purchases in our Nature Shop.

The Friends of Presqu'ile Park is a registered Canadian Charity #0802033-52.

Persons living in the Toronto area with further questions may contact Don Davis, Secretary, Board of Directors, The Friends of Presqu'ile Park at: (416) 638-7738 or email: donald_davis@stubbs.woodsworth.utoronto.ca
