WBT Wild Bird Trust of British Columbia
Making British Columbia a Safer Place for BirdsThe Society’s first project, at Maplewood Flats in North Vancouver, is an example of how protection and enhancement of wildlife habitat can be compatible with public use and enjoyment. In the four and a half years of its existence, the Trust has had success in establishing the first wildlife sanctuary on Burrard Inlet's north shore. This seventy-five acre site adjoins and helps protect the largest area of salt marsh and mud flats in Burrard Inlet. The creation of a new 5 acre fresh water marsh was recently completed and is a small step towards restoring the small amount of wetland which remains in Burrard Inlet.

Birding FAQs - www.birdingfaqs.com
My name is Daniel Bastaja. I've just recently launched a non-commercial Web site called Birding FAQs at www.birdingfaqs.com.I do regular birdwalks for some of the parks departments in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia and found, invariably, there would be a lot of questions like...."What do I look for in a pair of binoculars ?" "What's the best field guide to use?" etc. The Web site attempts to cover all those birding basics. It contains a lot of general information but has a definite greater Vancouver bias so it would go under B.C. regional links.

sboic@sk.sympatico.caThe Centre was opened in 1997 to allow visitors to see & learn more about these endangered owls. It is estimated by the researchers working on this species that it will be extripated from our province within 5 years. Last year, only 50% of our birds returned.
The Centre's mandate is threefold... 1. Education 2. Research 3. Ecotourism
Education
This is the first year that the centre is open year round. This allows me to be able to reach many children in the school room setting. Luna, our imprinted educational owl, has visited over 2000 people since September 99 to spread the word about the importance of protecting Native Prairie and the plight of the Burrowing Owl. Together we have ventured to schools, seniors homes, natural history socities, parks & muesums across our province.During one of our visits children participate in skits, songs and stories. This way they are involved, have fun and still learn. At the conclusion of each visit people are encouraged to come up and touch Luna.
Research
Currently at the Centre we have 10 captive owls. These owls will be an important component of the genetic link essential when a reintroduction project begins. In the summer of 2000 the offspring of these owls will be cross fostered into wild nests. This way we will be able to increase the number of fledglings in the wild and diversify our genetic pool of the Centre. While at the Centre visitors can view these owls in their outdoor pens. Or venture with an interpreter out to our blind and view owls in the wild. Many of these wild owls live in artificial nest boxes which are predator deterants. These ANB were installed by researchers in the past years.
Ecotourism
Being a relatively new Centre we are always looking at increasing the knowledge of our Centre. We are located just 2 minutes off of the TransCanada in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan. This location, the Moose Jaw Exhibition, was chosen for it's accessablity as well, owls have nested in an abandoned race track on the Exhibition grounds for a number of years. For those birders who would like to view these owls year round I encourage them to stop in. They won't be dissapointed!
I am also availble to bring Luna for guest speaking engagements. I hope to do a tour with Luna in the Ontario Parks system in 2000.
Wadena Wetlands/Quill Lakes Interpretive Area
Halfway between Saskatoon and Yorkton, just north of the Yellow Head Highway #16 is one of the most nationally and internationally recognized sites of importance to birds, the Quill Lakes. Hosting over 300 species and over one million birds annually, it is no wonder the lakes have received numerous distinctions as a site of exceptional interest. The lakes were first recognized as a wetland of global important in 1971 when they were designated a "Ramsar" site. This was followed by its protection as a Saskatchewan Heritage Marsh in 1985, an international and endangered species Western Hemispheric Shorebird Reserve in 1994, an accredited watchable wildlife viewing area in 1995, and Saskatchewan's first Important Birding Area in 1998.
Redberry Lake lies in the Parkland Ecoregion of Saskatchewan, Canada. It has been a national bird sanctuary since 1915. Saskatchewan has included the lake in its "Representative Areas Network" of ecologically important sites. In 2000, the entire Redberry Lake watershed was named a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
