Bird Photography Tips #28 by Scott Fairbairn and John Reaume |
While the geese and the cranes are the refuges claim to fame, there are also many other species to photograph. The visitor center is an excellent place to photograph as the staff put out seed and water. Species include Gambel's Quail, Flicker, Spotted Towhee among many others (The center keeps a list of recently seen birds). In summary, Bosque del Apache WR is a marvelous place to see and photograph birds.
"Late afternoon Photography"
When the wind is coming from the SW in late afternoon, the cranes and geese will be flying directly at you as they return to the marsh to roost.
Late afternoon at the cranepools can be a treat when there is lots of color in the sky to silhouette the birds against.
