LEEDS & GRENVILLE Recent Birding Reports

Hi Gord,

I'm located on a gravel road on a 20 acre hobby farm in the general
North Augusta area. (Rocksprings). I am about 25 kms NNE of Brockville
as the crow flies and have the usual assortment of common winter feeder
birds, cardinal m/f, mourning doves, chickadees, bluejays, juncos, song
sparrows, downy woodpecker m/f, hairy woodpecker m/f. (and wild turkeys
who think they are a feeder bird!)

The early spring return group of redwing blackbird, grackles, cowbirds,
goldfinches, robins.

I'm assuming that because there is no recent data for my area it is
because no one has submitted so here goes.

April 16, 2003 - 2 fox sparrows spotted under our front shrubs "kicking
up" seed.

April 18, 2003 - 3 pairs tree swallows returned to check out nesting
boxes. (housed 2 pairs last year - fledged 8 total)

April 18, 2003 - 1 female bluebird returned and checked out nesting
boxes briefly. Have not seen her since. (1 pair seen and nested -
fledged 3)

April 18, 2003 - 3 evening grosbeaks were at a feeder for a snack
before heading on their way. They visited us the same time last year..3
of them..for a snack and then on their way.

After checking out the hummingbird migration map for 2003 and comparing
it to 2002, it appears that the hummers are about 2 weeks ahead of
schedule so I am expecting to see some this weekend (they usually arrive
at my place between May5-8 every year).

I will keep you posted!

Thanks for maintaining this site. I find it very interesting.
