  • hawk owl in our area - Sun, 21 Jan 2001

Hi there, just wanted to let you know there is a hawk owl that has been hanging around our neighborhood now for about 1&1/2 months. He is actually at our neighbours place, sits in the same tree pretty much every day all day long. Quite the cute little character, it is. We live in Bancroft, about 3 miles from the town actually. I have never seen a hawk owl before, so I just thought it might be a strange sighting for around here.

  • Water Pipits in Madoc - Sat, 20 May 2000

Sighting reports originating from the ONTBIRDS mail server network are repeated courtesy of the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO).

I am visiting my parents this weekend in Madoc (40 km N of Belleville) and during my walk through (muddy) ploughed fields this morning, I was rewarded with seeing Water Pipets. There must have been at least 75-100 of them flying up & down - just like goldfinches. Once they decided where to land, I was able to get a better look at them. They moved along the ground like horned larks, had a white eyeline, dull yellow streaky breast and had a white along the edge of their tails. And then, they were up again flying one direction and then the next.

    Good birding!

FYI - the farm is N of Hwy 7, just E of Hwy 62, across from the police station.

  • Great Egret - Deseronto Rd/401 - Sun, 14 May 2000

Sighting reports originating from the ONTBIRDS mail server network are repeated courtesy of the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO).

While driving westbound from Kingston on Saturday with my parents, we spotted a beautiful great egret sitting very close to the 401 in a wetland area, about 2 km east of the Deseronto Road Exit (Exit 570). It had a stunningly brilliant yellow bill.
