I was surprised to hear a Common Yellowthroat singing at Cooper Marsh, west of South Lancaster, this afternoon. Other recent arrivals in the marsh include Rusty Blackbirds, Tree Swallows, Common Snipe, Pied-billed Grebe, and a female Belted Kingfisher. Another observer reported hearing a Marsh Wren. There were at least four pairs of Wood Duck. I saw my first Vesper Sparrow of the year on Cedar Grove Road just west of Schoolhouse Road. There were many Canada and Snow Geese in the same vicinity this a.m. Rusty Blackbirds were also in evidence. Directions: Cooper Marsh: Exit 401 at Lancaster and head west about four kilometers on Co. Rd 2. Cedar Grove Road runs west off 34 5 kms. north of Lancaster Village. Martin Bowman Willaimstown, Ont pict@mail2.glen-net.ca
Blue Geese - April 7, 2002
Hello, all Just a quick note to let you know that there are quite a number of Blue morph Snow Geese in with a big flock of Snow Geese at the same site as the Glossy Ibis last spring (no glossy ibis, though!). The flock takes off when someone goes up the driveway, and flies to another farm then returns. The locations is in Glengarry County, north of Alexandria. Follow Hwy 34 to Laggan, and turn west away from the school and look for the Franklin's Farm sign about 1.5 km down the road at civic number 20116. The flock is also in the flooded part of the field on the other side of the west line fence. Good luck. I won't have time tomorrow to check if they are still there. Peggi Calder billc@cnwl.igs.net
