ALGOMA EAST
The Elliot Lake-Deer Trail Route
and the North Shore of Lake Huron

(east to west)

..This Algoma East Checklist Starts at Town of Spanish on Hwy. 17. Visit the new Spanish Marina where there is excellent waterfowl viewing at the mouth of the Spanish River. From there follow Hwy 17 west to the beginning of the Deer Trail. It will take you north, up Hwy 108 past the Fox and Black Creek marshes, to destinations in and around the City of Elliot Lake. Stop in at the Sherriff Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, under the stewardship of the Penokean Hills Field Naturalists. Many bird habitats are included, on marked trails, through Beaver Meadows, Upland Forests and Tamarack Bogs. The bio-diversity makes for an excellent variety of bird species. Further north on Hwy 108 and continuing on Hwy 639 you will drive into the Mississagi Provincial Park. This is a wilderness park, that provides the birder with an opportunity to observe upland and forest dwelling birds of the boreal edge. Should time permit enjoy one or two of the many well marked trails within Mississagi Park. As you continue north, still within the Park boundaries, take time to stop at Flack Lake and walk the short trail that starts right at the boat launch parking area. At the end of Hwy 639 you will turn south-west (left) along the Little White River on Hwy 546 which offers spectacular scenery and very good riparian birding. The Deer trail is completed as 546 swings south to Iron Bridge...you are now back on the Trans-Canada Hwy 17. As you continue west to Thessalon there are many fine open-meadow birding opportunities on the road systems south of Hwy 17. Finally, spend some time observing waterfowl, shorebirds and waders on the shores of Lake Huron in the Thessalon Area.
