  • Golden Eagles at Hawk Cliff - Sun, 30 Sep 2001

    Hello Birders:
    Light South East winds and clear blue skies were not great for hawk
    watching.
    The highlight of the day was the first sighting of an immature Golden Eagle
    found by Alf Rider, at almost the same time a little further inland Ray
    Riley had an adult Golden Eagle.

  • Hawk Cliff Elgin - Sat, 29 Sep 2001

    Hello Birders.
    Sept 28th.
    Dave Brown was at the Cliff yesterday and sends this report.
    It was a great day!!! Lots of Bald Eagles, a few Peregrines and Merlins and
    a pile of Coopers Hawks (more than I've ever seen in one day).

    Lots of visitors were at the cliff both days to see the migration and
    displays. We had visitors from as far afield as England and Belgium. A
    special thanks to the Hawk Cliff Raptor Banders and St Thomas Field
    Naturalist club for the first of the Hawk Cliff weekends. Looking forward to
    seeing more people and more Raptors next weekend.
     Raptor show at 11:00am and 2:00pm on the 22 & 23rd Sept.
    On behalf of the Hawk Cliff Foundation, I would like to thank all those who
    helped put the weekend on.

  • Broad-wings and Swainsons at Hawk Cliff - Fri, 14 Sep 2001

    Hello All :
    Sorry for the late posting I am waiting for the final tally of hawks from
    Dave Brown today at Hawk Cliff, but while I was there we had thousands of
    Broad-winged hawks, one **SWAINSONS HAWK** hundreds of Sharp-shinned and
    American Kestrels, Harriers , Osprey, and Eagles in good numbers.

    Also seen were a pair of Northern Parula.
    Counters and spotters  Dave Brown, Tom Hayman.Keith Seeley, and others, I
    don't know  their last names.
    
    The St Thomas Field Naturalists, Hawk Cliff weekends, are been held
    Saturday
    Sept 15th, Sunday Sept 16th, and Sat Sept 22nd & Sun 23rd. Weather
    conditions permitting, The Hawk Cliff Raptor Banders, will be having their
    live Raptor displays, at 11:00am and 2:00pm. each day 0f both of these
    weekends.
    It is always a great opportunity to see some of  these wonderful birds up
    close.
    Tell your friends , neighbours and relatives!!!!
    Bring a lunch and your chairs and stay awhile. Don't forget your
    binoculars and camera!!!

  • american avocet at Aylmer,Ont. - Sat, 30 Jun 2001

    Hey Gord

    On june 29/01 at the aylmer wildlife mang.area {near police college} we sighted an american avocet at 3:00pm and then again at 7:30pm feeding in the same spot. Also seen lesser yellowlegs,least sandpiper,spotted sandpipers,g.w.teal,am.wigeon,pheasant and brown thrashers

  • Birding in Elgin - Tue, 20 Mar 2001

    i spotted a pair of bufflehead ducks (male and female) and some green-winged teel at the 3 acre pond at the Fingal Game Preserve (just outside of St Thomas in Elgin County) There were also two other types of waterfowl, that i will not be able to identify until my photographic gets developed at Blacks.
