  • Sightings along the St Lawrence - Sun, 06 May 2001

Things are picking up now that spring is bursting out with leaves......

A trip to Cooper Marsh yielded Warbling Vireo, Yellow Warbler, Swamp
Sparrow, Bobolink, Blue-winged Teal, Common Snipe, Belted Kingfisher,Marsh
Wren,Sora, Pied-billed Grebe, Osprey, Great Blue Heron, Black-crowned Night
    Heron and Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Cooper Marsh is 18 km east of Cornwall on Rte 2, or take Hwy 401, exit on
County Rd 34 and head south to lancaster where you turn right onto Rte 2
    west.

Heading further west along Rte 2, Dickerson Island (just past Summerstown)
had the usual colonies of Great Blue Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Great
Egret and Double-crested Cormorants, the latter rapidly taking over from the
    herons!

There were Cliff Swallows building their conical nests on a Maintenance
garage at Chrysler Marina near Morrisburg, and down near Iriquois, still on
Rte 2, was an American Bittern.

Turning up Shanley Rd at Cardinal, towards Ottawa, I saw another Bobolink
and an Eastern Kingbird (and a healthy-looking Coyote).

Finally along Armstrong Rd south of the Ottawa Airport I saw 3 of the
Short-eared Owls that frequent that area between Limebank Rd and Bowesville
Rd, and the Bank Swallow Colony has returned to the section of High Rd at
the north end of Armstrong Rd.

    Cheers, Eve

  • Glossy Ibis - Wed, 18 Apr 2001

    Hello, Gord!

There has been a Glossy Ibis feeding in a field about 1.5 km east of
Laggan, Ontario since Easter Sunday. If you locate Alexandria on an Eastern
Ontario map, trace Hwy 34 north, you will find Laggan about halfway to the
    MacCrimmon corner.

The location is west of Laggan on Kenyon Concession 8 road, and look for a
large sign "Franklins Farm" (civic 20116 on the mailbox). The Ibis is
usually on the west side of the driveway feeding in or resting beside
either of two large flooded areas.

You can email me if there are questions.
