recorded on Mon April 5 at 9:05am. To report a bird sighting,

Observers in the Calgary birding area could be on the lookout for spring
species arriving in the area much earlier than usual this year. The warm
weather of the past 2 - 3 weeks has already produced some very early birds.
Reports over the weekend included more early arrivals, possibly even
record-early. Firstly, 2 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS were seen at Langdon
Reservoir by Terry Korolyk on Friday, April 2. Secondly, and thirdly, Dave
Brown on April 3 found an AMERICAN BITTERN at a slough on Township Road 250
at the Range Road 274 junction just northeast of Chestermere Lake, and Kevin
Barker on April 3 observed an adult PIED-BILLED GREBE on the Bow River in
Banff near the Canoe Boat Rentals near the Banff Mineral Springs Hospital.
Other spring arrivals included at least 2 SONG SPARROWS heard by Terry
Korolyk on Sunday, April 4 at the Bankside area of east Fish Creek Prov.
Park.

A 1st year THAYER'S GULL was seen at the Shepard landfill on Sunday,
April 4. The bird was seen by Terry Korolyk at the southeast corner of the
landfill on 68 St. SE in Calgary.

A female RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was seen above the weir at
Carseland-Wyndham Prov. Park on Friday, April 2. The bird was observed by
Terry Korolyk. Terry also reported a pair of WOOD DUCKS were on the slough
at Policeman's Flats on April 4, and reported 1 male EURASIAN WIGEON was at
the slough at Glenmore Trail and Range Road 284 on April 2. Another unusual
location for WOOD DUCKS was the east side of Prince's Island Park where
Simone Marler observed a pair on March 22.

There have been 2 recent reports of Krider's subspecies RED-TAILED HAWKS.
Dwight Knapik watched a single bird on April 1 on Plummers Road 2 kms. east
of Brown-Lowery Prov. Park near Millarville, and Terry Korolyk observed a
Krider's, or Krider's light phase intergrade at Policeman's Flats on April
4. Policeman's Flats are at the terminus of 40 St SE off Dunbow Road south
of Calgary.

Bill Walker observed a flock of 60 SNOW GEESE on April 2 at Langdon
Reservoir on Hwy 22X east of Hwy 797.

Lucille Harrison reported 2 TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRES were east of Bowness
Park on 85th St on April 4 and Libby and Andy Hill reported a male and
female PURPLE FINCH were in their yard at 28 Ave & 20 St SW in Calgary last
week. The PURPLE FINCHES probably overwintered in the region as undoubtedly
was an AMERICAN GOLDFINCH seen by Terry Korolyk at Policeman's Flats on
April 12.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, April 8.

Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was
recorded on Thur Apr 8 at 11am. To report a bird sighting,
leave a message after the recording or to bypass the recorded message, press
the pound key on your touch tone phone. To speak to a naturalist, please
phone 221-4500 during office hours.

A male Eurasian GREEN-WINGED TEAL was seen at Frank Lake, east of High
River, on Sunday April 4. The bird was seen by Bernard and Therese Goulet,
Jim Black and Brian Donnelly. This is probably either only the first or
second record for the province of Alberta. The bird was south of the blind
at the lake and was fairly close to the blind. The road to the blind was
still gated on Sunday, so it may be necessary to walk in to the blind from
the gate. Frank Lake is approximately 6 kms. east of High River on Hwy 23.
Watch for the entrance road to the lake on the south side of the highway.
Just eastward, the highway bends to the north.

One of the resident downtown PEREGRINE FALCONS appears to have arrived
on territory. Roland Deschenes reported that on Tuesday, April 6, he saw the
bird fly past his window at Bankers' Hall. On Friday, April 2, Roland
observed a GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCH perched on his window sill at Bankers'
Hall. Roland believes the bird may have flown into the building because of
inclement weather that day, but the bird eventually recovered and flew off.

A SANDHILL CRANE appeared on Saturday, April 3 at the Calgary Zoo's
Private Breeding Ranch off Dunbow Road south of Calgary. Dwight Knapik
observed the bird and also reported the bird was still at the ranch on the
days of April 4 and 5.

Greg Wagner has reported the first YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD of the spring
season. Greg saw the birds at Frank Lake last week. Dick and Lenora Flynn
have reported the first COMMON GRACKLE - they had a bird in their yard in
the Maple Ridge district of Calgary on Wednesday, April 7.

Terry Korolyk observed a pair of WOOD DUCKS just north of the Hwy 22X
Bridge at Hull's Wood in east Fish Creek Prov. Park on April 8. Thus far
this spring, pairs of WOOD DUCKS have been seen at the Inglewood Bird
Sanctuary, Prince's Island, Policeman's Flats and now, Hull's Wood. Dwight
Knapik reported the WOOD DUCKS seen at Policeman's Flats April 4 were still
there on April 7.

Ted Bodner observed a partially albino COMMON RAVEN near Springbank on
April 4. The bird was perched on a fencepost just east of the Springbank
Airport.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, April 12.

A first-summer LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at the Inglewood Bird
Sanctuary in Calgary on Saturday, April 24. Terry Korolyk saw the bird.
Terry first saw it at approximately 1:15pm on the shoals on the river at the
north end of the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. He watched until 1:35pm when
strong winds carried the bird downriver. The bird had fairly uniform
brown-coloured upperparts, but was paler on the back. The head was very
white as was the upper breast and the lower breast was streaked brown. The
dark bill was dusky at the base and the tail was banded blackish. At the
same time at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, Terry observed one 1st year female
GLAUCOUS GULL.

A ROSS' GOOSE was seen in the Irricana Sloughs on Saturday, April 24. The
bird was found by Bill Walker, Keith Allsebrook and Mike Mulligan on a
slough on the south side of Township Road 270 approximately 5 miles east of
Range Road 255.

Bill Wilson observed the first HUDSONIAN GODWITS of the spring season on
Saturday, April 24. Bill found 2 birds at a slough on the east side of Hwy
817 approximately 4 miles north of the Hwy 1 junction in Strathmore. At the
same slough on Sunday, April 25, Andrew Slater saw 5 HUDSONIAN GODWITS.
Other birds arriving in the area within the last week included the first
AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS of the season. Dwight Knapik saw 28 birds above the
Carseland Weir on Thursday, April 22. The same day, Dwight also saw a
MOURNING DOVE near the Township Road 212-Range Road 260 junction south of
Carseland-Wyndham Prov. Park. At Kitsim Reservoir west of Brooks, Dwight
saw 2 WILLETS and 3 WESTERN GREBES, and at Wolf Lake (which was almost
completely dry) on Hwy 561 east of Hussar, Dwight reported CHESTNUT-COLLARED
LONGSPURS in good numbers along with 100s of LAPLAND LONGSPURS and 2 SNOW
BUNTINGS that were near Crawling Valley Reservoir near Bassano. At the
north end of Crawling Valley Reservoir, Dwight reported 6 RED-BREASTED
MERGANSERS.

Kevin Barker reported a male HARLEQUIN DUCK was on the Bow River in Canmore
