Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird
Alert was recorded Monday, January 19, 2004, at 12 noon. To report
a bird sighting, leave a message after the recording or to bypass

There have been no reports on the AMERICAN BLACK DUCK south of the Eric
Harvie Bridge at Carburn Park since Monday, Jan 12. At that time, the
bird was seen by Therese and Bernard Goulet and Mike Mulligan from a view
point near a small green concrete building at an estimated 500 metres
south of the Bridge. The Goulets on Friday, Jan 8, had originally found
the bird just south of the Bridge, and the bird was seen by other
observers later in the day.

The GREAT BLUE HERON at the Highwood Golf Course in High River has not
been seen since Monday, Jan 12. Ken Wallace of 333 Fairway View, in the
Fairway Greens subdivision, had first noticed the bird at a frozen pond on
the Golf Course, which is behind their house, before Christmas.

Andrew Slater found a NORTHERN PYGMAY OWL along Hwy 546 west of Turner
Valley on Sunday, Jan 18. The bird was perched at the top of a spruce
tree in a marshy area approx 500 m east of the Macabee Creek Bridge.
Still on Hwy 546, but approx 1 km east of the Kananaskis Country
boundary, Andrew observed a NORTHERN SHRIKE.

Kevin Barker watched an adult VARIED THRUSH along Whiskey Creek in the
Banff townsite on Sunday, Jan 18. Kevin thinks this could be the same
bird that was there on Nov 30. On Jan 17, Kevin observed 2 GREEN-WINGED
TEAL at Middle Vermilion Lake in Banff NP. Kevin believes these birds
were there on Dec 27, when he originally found them.

The adult TUNDRA SWAN that has been overwintering in Calgary north of the
bridge across the Bow River at the Burnsmead area of Fish Creek PP was
observed at that location by Terry Korolyk on Jan 17.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, Jan 22.

A RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD was seen along the eastern perimeter of Calgary on
Sunday, Feb 1.  The bird was found by Terry Korolyk.  The bird was a male;
it was perched with a large flock of HOUSE SPARROWS in shrubs by a farm on
the east side of 68 St SE at the 86 Ave junction, south of Glenmore Tr.

A HARRIS' SPARROW has been seen in Canmore. The bird was seen on
Tuesday, Feb 3, by Kevin Barker at West Pond, which is a tributary of
Policeman's Creek. For more information on this bird, call Kevin Barker
in Canmore at 678-6102.

Ted Bodnar observed a GYRFALCON fly past his house, which is west of
Calgary, on Sunday, Feb 1. The bird was a gray morph - it was moving
eastwards from his home, which is on the Springbank Links Golf Course.
On Monday, Feb 2, Ted observed a dark-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at the
Stoney Tr junction with Hwy 1, west of Canada Olympic Park; then on
Tuesday, Feb 3, Ted observed probably the same bird perched in a tree a
little further west of this location.

There have been several reports of AMERICAN ROBINS recently. These are
probably overwintering birds as it is much too early for spring migrants.
Recent reports include a flock of 5 that were seen flying in the Parkdale
district of Calgary at 10 am, Monday, Feb 2, by Rob Worona. An
unidentified observer at the University of Calgary reported a lone ROBIN
feeding on fallen crabapples under trees at the foot of the Education

REDHEAD Ducks continue to be reported in unusually large numbers this winter
on the Bow River in southeast Calgary. The most recent report comes from
Rob Worona who observed 13 REDHEADS on the river in Carburn Park on Sunday,
February 8. The highest count of the season was 18 birds on January 14 by
Andrew Slater, at a location approximately 500 metres south of the Eric
Harvie Bridge, which is at the extreme south end of Carburn Park. REDHEADS
are not an annual overwintering bird in Calgary, and when they do attempt to
overwinter, it is usually in numbers less than a handful.

The WILSON'S SNIPE that was attempting to overwinter at Carburn Park in the
city has failed in it's bid to do so. Rob Worona found the bird dead from
starvation in the Park on Sunday, February 8.

Dwight Knapik reported 2 HORNED LARKS at the Calgary Zoo's private breeding
ranch off Dunbow Road south of Calgary on Wednesday, February 11. It is
unknown whether the birds are early spring migrants or overwintering birds.
There have been a few reports of overwintering HORNED LARKS in the Calgary
area this winter season.

Several observers within Calgary have reported AMERICAN ROBINS recently.
These are overwintering birds as the weather has been much too cold for
spring migration of AMERICAN ROBINS.

sightings as possible. Supply route name or number, distances from
prominent landmarks etc. Please supply your name with spelling if
applicable and your phone number and address also if applicable.

Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was
recorded on Thursday, February 19 at 12:10 p.m. To report a bird sighting,
leave a message after the recording or to bypass the recorded message, press
the pound key on your touch tone phone. To speak to a naturalist, please

Observers in the City can be on the lookout for a pair of BALD EAGLES that
may have started nesting along the Bow River just north of the Glenmore
Trail Bridge. Two observers, Cathy Grandia and Terry Korolyk both reported
the birds there this week. Terry Korolyk observed one of the birds at a
large stick nest near the Cement Plant at that location on Wednesday,
February 18.

A VARIED THRUSH appears to be successfully overwintering at a residence in
the West Varsity area of Calgary. The bird has been coming daily to the
yard of Shauneen O'Brien since January 21. The bird is a male; Shauneen
said she had 2 male VARIED THRUSHES around her home in mid-December.
Anybody wishing a chance to see this bird can call Shauneen at 286-9144.

A gray-morph GYRFALCON was seen near High River on Wednesday, February 18 at
2:30 pm. The bird was seen by Jean Moore. Jean said the bird flew over Hwy
2 just south of the Hwy 23 junction. Wayne Moore observed a flock of 1000
SN0W BUNTINGS east of Nanton on Sunday, February 15. The birds were 2 miles
north of Hwy 533 on RR 280.

Penny Smith observed 2 AMERICAN CROWS at Edworthy Park in Calgary earlier
this week. An AMERICAN ROBIN continues to sing in her neighbourhood in
Parkdale. These are probably overwintering birds, but given continued good
weather, spring migrants could be arriving soon

Callers are reminded that the annual CFNS Snowy Owl Prowl goes this
Saturday, February 21. Interested participants are to meet in the NW corner
of the Sunridge Mall parking lot at 32 Ave & 36 St NE before 10 am. For

Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was
recorded on Friday, February 27 at 8:30 a.m. To report a bird sighting,

Chances look good this year that a pair of BALD EAGLES will be nesting at
a large nest near the Lafarge Plant on the west side of the Bow River,
north of the Glenmore Trail Bridge in Calgary. At least two observers
reported the birds near that location last week and the birds have been
easily seen daily there and appear to be on territory. If the birds do
nest there this would be the third successive year that BALD EAGLES will
have nested along the river in southeast Calgary. Observers could watch
for BALD EAGLES nesting along the Bow River in northwest Calgary this year
as well, as there have been reports within the past couple of years of
birds in that area during the breeding months.

At least two, and possibly as many as four EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES have
been seen in Nanton. Speculation has it that the birds have been there
all winter. The birds have been seen by several observers in the general
area of 24 and 26 Avenues around 21 & 22 Streets.

Andrew Slater observed a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE below the Glenmore Dam on
Wednesday, February 25. The bird was 100 metres upstream from the parking
lot in front of Sandy Beach. Andrew also reported the AMERICAN DIPPER that
had been overwintering there was approximately 300 metres below the Dam on
February 25, and he observed 2 AMERICAN ROBINS on the hillside above the
AMERICAN DIPPER. To reach Sandy Beach follow Riverview Dr westward from
Elbow Drive.

The Calgary Bird Alert apologizes to it's many callers for any inconvenience
they may have experienced due to technical problems with the Bird Alert over
the past two days.

Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was
recorded on Monday, March 15 at 11:00 a.m. To report a bird sighting,
leave a message after the recording, or to bypass the recorded message,
press the pound key on your touch tone phone. To speak to a naturalist,
please phone 221-4500 during office hours.

A male and female RED-BREASTED MERGANSER were reported at the Inglewood
Bird Sanctuary in Calgary on Sunday, March 14. Mary Coughlin and Mary
Nelson saw the birds on the river at the north end of the Sanctuary.
Up to two males were on the Bow River in the Beaverdam Flats-Carburn
Park areas during the winter season, but there were no reports of females.
If one or both of the March 14 birds are genuine spring migrants, then
these would be much earlier than usual arrivals in the Calgary area.

The first EURASIAN WIGEON of the spring season has been reported.
Andrew Slater observed a lone male in open water at the waste water
inlet in the NW corner of Frank Lake on Hwy 23, east of High River
on Sunday, March 14. Rob Worona observed a lone SNOW GOOSE that was
flying with 12 CANADA GEESE over the Parkdale district of Calgary on
Thursday, March 11.

A WESTERN MEADOWLARK was seen southwest of Okotoks on Thursday, March 11.
Dwight Knapik saw the bird on 498 Ave at 64 St SE. The same day Dwight
reported a male NORTHERN HARRIER was 34 kms east of Cardston on secondary
Hwy 501.

A flock of 4 first year CEDAR WAXWINGS were seen flycatching from aspen
trees in the Midnapore area of Calgary on Thursday, March 11. The birds
were seen by Terry Korolyk along Midridge Drive where it meets Fish Creek
PP. These birds probably overwintered somewhere in the south end of the
city. Terry Korolyk heard a SONG SPARROW calling at Policeman's Flats
south of Calgary on Saturday, March 13. The bird was calling from dense
willows along the west shore of the Bow River approximately 200-300 yards
upriver from the parking area. This bird could be either an overwintering
bird or a spring migrant, as there were several reports of the species in
Calgary during the winter season. Policeman's Flats is at the terminus
of 40 St SE off Dunbow Road.

Carol Shields of Namaka reported on Friday, March 12, that she was still
seeing SNOWY OWLS in the Namaka area SE of Calgary.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, March 18.

A possible spring migrant male AMERICAN WIGEON was seen in a flock of
approximately 400 MALLARDS and 300 CANADA GEESE on 72 St SE in Calgary
on Friday, March 12. The bird was seen by Terry Korolyk just south of

reported this spring include EURASIAN WIGEON at Frank Lake, located
approximately 6 kms east of High River on Hwy 23, and NORTHERN PINTAIL
and MALLARD have been reported in small numbers with the greatest
numbers thus far being at Frank Lake. On Friday, March 12, Terry Korolyk
reported 2 pairs of NORTHERN PINTAILS were on a slough approximately
5.2 kms north of the Oxbow Golf Course Road - Hwy 817 junction at the
north end of Strathmore. TUNDRA SWANS so far this season have been
reported at Frank Lake and at Chestermere Lake at the Hwy 1 - 1A junction
east of Calgary.

Penny Smith reported 4 AMERICAN CROWS flying over Bragg Creek west of
Calgary on Sunday, March 14. AMERICAN ROBINS are becoming widespread,
although still in low numbers in Calgary and the surrounding countryside.
On Thursday, March 11, Dwight Knapik observed a WESTERN MEADOWLARK
southwest of Okotoks at 498 Ave & 68 St.

Jason Rogers reported a HOUSE FINCH was flying west of the University
of Calgary on Monday, March 15. This species has been expanding it's
range within Calgary in the past few years. To this point, it is probably
most common in the Marlborough, North Haven and Varsity areas of the city.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, March 22.
