A VIRGINIA RAIL was found at the Banff Cave and Basin Marsh on the
Banff-Canmore Christmas Bird Count, held on Saturday, Dec 20. The bird
was seen by Kevin Barker, Heather Dempsey and Keith Webb. Other birds
seen by the group at the Cave and Basin Marsh included a WINTER WREN,
a GREAT BLUE HERON, a SONG SPARROW, 5 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and 2 KILLDEER.
A lone STELLER'S JAY was seen at the Marsh by Kevin Barker and Keith Webb.
The Cave and Basin HERON was 1 of 2 found on the CBC with the other
bird being in Canmore. For more specific directions to the locations of
these birds, contact Kevin Barker in Canmore at 678-6102.

Three AMERICAN COOTS were observed at Frank Lake, east of High River, on
Thursday, Dec 18. The birds were seen by Phil Cram, Mike Mulligan, and
Bernard and Therese Goulet. A total of 6 AMERICAN COOTS had been found
there on the High River CBC, held on Tuesday, Dec 16. The birds were in a
stretch of open water that was to the west of the entrance road off Hwy 23
in the NW corner of the Lake. The entrance road is gated, however, so it
will be necessary to walk in from that point. Frank Lake is a few
kilometres east of High River. Watch for the entrance road sign on the
south side of Hwy 23. Phil Cram et al also reported the female
LONG-TAILED DUCK was still north of the Hwy 22X bridge over the Bow in
east Fish Creek PP on Dec 18, and also saw a lone NORTHERN SHRIKE on
Meridian Road, S of High River. They saw 1 NORTHERN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER
at Brown-Lowery Recreation Area on Plummer's Road near Millarville.

Terry Korolyk observed an immature dark-morph GYRFALCON on 68(?) St SE on
the east side of the Shepard landfill on Sunday, Dec 21, and the
same day observed a 1st-year SNOWY OWL along a fencerow north of
Inverlake Rd on the first north/south road west of Hwy 9.

The City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert would like to take this
opportunity to wish its many callers well at this time of year and may we
all enjoy the best of birding in 2004. The next scheduled update of the
Bird Alert is Friday, Dec 26.

An adult SWAN was seen on Tuesday, Dec 16, on the Bow River north of the
footbridge across the River at the Burnsmead area of east Fish Creek
Provincial Park. The bird was seen by Terry Korolyk. It was a few
hundred metres north of the bridge and has reportedly been in this area
since Dec 1. It is reported to be a TUNDRA SWAN. Terry also reported
that the female LONG-TAILED DUCK that has been on the Bow River north of
the Hwy 22X bridge was at that location again on Tuesday, Dec 16. On Dec
16, Terry didn't see the GREAT BLUE HERON that had been south of the
bridge since Nov 8, but Marion McIntyre of Shawnee Road reported seeing a
large bird that she thinks might have been a GREAT BLUE HERON on Sunday,
Dec 14, at 4:05 pm, flying eastward along James McKevitt Rd, just south of
Fish Creek Provincial Park and west of McLeod Trail.

Other recent sightings of interest include an AMERICAN KESTEL seen by
Terry Korolyk on Monday, Dec 15, flying westward across McLeod Trail
between the Lake Fraser Gate and Anderson Rd intersections. Dave Brown
on Wednesday, Dec 17, observed a GOLDEN EAGLE within the Calgary city limits.
The bird was at the remains of a rabbit on the south side of 80 Ave NE
between 68 St and 84 St at 2:10 in the afternoon. Terry Korolyk
observed 2 AMERICAN CROWS on Wednesday, Dec 17, at Bonaventure School just
north of Canyon Meadows Drive on Acadia Dr.

Birds in the town of Canmore recently include a SWAMP SPARROW and a
HARRIS' SPARROW seen by Kevin Barker on Dec 15 along Policeman's Creek.
For specific directions to the birds, call Kevin in Canmore at 678-6102.
The same day, Kevin also saw a NORTHERN GOSHAWK pursuing a COMMON RAVEN
near a trailer park along Spring Creek in Canmore, and on Dec 13, with Dan
Measor, he saw a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL along Spring Creek near Dan Measor's
house.

Final results of the Dec 14 Calgary Christmas Bird Count showed a record
number of species and a record number of birds. Final number of species
was well over the old record of 70 and the total number of birds at 54,000
was approx 5,000 above the old high. Final numbers included feeder
watcher figures.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, Dec 22.

A female LONG-TAILED DUCK has been seen once again north of the Hwy 22X
bridge in east Fish Creek PP in Calgary. The bird, which had originally
been seen once in the late Fall in the same area, was seen there by Terry
Korolyk on Tuesday, Dec 9. This is probably the same bird that has spent
the previous two Winters at this location. The same day, Terry observed
the GREAT BLUE HERON south of the bridge, where the bird has been since
Nov 8. The bird appeared to be listening for mice in the grasses just off
the shoreline. Other waterfowl seen by Terry Korolyk at the Hwy 22X
bridge on Dec 9 included 1 male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, 1 GADWALL and 1 female
AMERICAN WIGEON. At Hull's Wood, Terry observed a dark morph
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK.

A WILSON'S SNIPE has been seen by several observers recently in Carburn
Park. The most recent report is of Bernard and Therese Goulet, who
observed the bird on Tuesday, Dec 9, at the wooden footbridge west of the
parking lot.

Horst Grothman had a SONG SPARROW at his feeder in the Bowmont Natural
Area on Monday, Dec 8. For more information, call Horst at 286-3048.

The BOREAL OWL that was seen by many observers on Montana Dr in northwest
Calgary on Sunday, Dec 7, is reported to have flown off that evening.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, Dec 15.

Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was
recorded on Thurs. Nov 13 at 11am. To report a bird sighting,
leave a message after the recording or to bypass the recorded message, press
the pound key on your touch tone phone. To speak to a naturalist, please
phone 221-4500 during office hours.

A ROSS'S GOOSE was seen along the Bow River in Calgary on Wednesday,
November 12. The bird was seen on the river at Beaverdam Flats by Ray Woods
and a CFNS Field Trip. The bird flew upriver after being watched for a few
minutes.

An adult MEW GULL was found on the Bow River at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary
on Sunday, November 9. Robert Storms found the bird opposite the upstream
bench, and at the same location also saw an adult GREATER WHITE-FRONTED
GOOSE.

An albino WAXWING was seen in the city by Darryl Addison?, who lives in the
Westgate area of Calgary, on Wednesday, Nov. 12. Darryl said the bird was
in a flock of approximately 50 regularly-plumaged WAXWINGS.

Alan MacKeigan observed 3 GREAT GRAY OWLS hunting during a snowstorm in the
Millerville area at 10am on Tuesday, November 11. The birds were 6.3
kilometres west of Hwy 22 on Hwy 549.

Marion Barker observed an AMERICAN KESTREL near her home in Canmore on two
days this week. Marion, who lives on Coyote Way, saw the bird on the days
of Tuesday, November 11 and Wednesday, November 12. Dick and Lenora Flynn
and a CFNS Field Trip observed a GREAT BLUE HERON on the Bow River between
Bankside and Mallard Point in Fish Creek Prov. Park on Sunday, November 9.
Terry Korolyk had observed one on Nov. 8 farther south of the Hwy 22X
Bridge.

The swan that was reported by Nemali Semiviratne on November 8 & 9 at the
22X Bridge has been seen by at least one other observer. The bird appears
to be neither a BEWICK'S or a WHOOPER SWAN, but a TUNDRA SWAN with a fairly
large yellow patch at the base of the bill.

Ray Woods and a CFNS field trip reported 5 RED-TAILED HAWKS in various
plumages in the Beaverdam Flats area on Nov. 12 while Al Kimberley and Terry
Korolyk watched an immature 'Calurus' subspecies light phase RED-TAILED HAWK
circling over Tunnel Mtn. at Banff townsite on Nov. 7. Dwight Knapik
observed a dark-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at the Calgary Zoo's Breeding Ranch
on Nov. 7, while Terry Korolyk reported either a PEREGRINE or PRAIRIE FALCON
flying north over Chinook Centre on Nov. 10.

Andrew Slater reported one winter-plumaged WHITE-TAILED PTARMIGAN 250 metres
south and 100 metres west of the parking lot in Highwood Pass on Sunday,
November 9.

A possible BEWICK'S or WHOOPER SWAN has been reported on the Bow River in
Calgary. The bird was seen on both Saturday, Nov. 8 and Sunday, Nov. 9 south
of the Hwy 22X bridge by Nimali Semirivatne.

There have been no reports on the male RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER in Banff since
Tuesday, Nov. 4. The bird had been seen by many observers since Sunday,
Nov. 2 feeding on honeysuckle berries from a shrub in the front yard of 402
Muskrat Street. It appears that the bird has moved on from that address due
to a depleted food supply; or it may have been killed by a BLACK-BILLED
MAGPIE. At 4:15pm Nov. 4, Fred Whiley observed the bird being pursued by a
Magpie and on Friday, Nov. 7, Terry Korolyk watched, at 402 Muskrat Street,
a Magpie attempt to kill a lone EUROPEAN STARLING near the honeysuckle bush.

A 1st year THAYER'S-ICELAND GULL intergrade that could be a KUMLIAN'S GULL
and a 1st year GLAUCOUS GULL were both seen at the Shepard Landfill from 68
St. SE on Saturday, Nov. 8 by Terry Korolyk. The THAYER'S-ICELAND
intergrade was first reported there on Oct. 28 while the GLAUCOUS GULL has
been in that area since October 8.

Terry Korolyk observed 3 LONG-TAILED DUCKS at Pine Coulee Reservoir by
Willow Creek Prov. Park on Sunday, Nov. 9. Terry saw a juvenile off the
boat launch there and then saw 2 adult females from the dam viewpoint.

Several observers watched a WINTER WREN at the Banff Cave and Basin Marsh on
Nov. 7. The bird was seen off the Blind Boardwalk by Terry Korolyk, Al
Kimberley, Milt and Elaine Spitzer, Jean Dunn, Walter & Lois Zwick and Kevin
Barker also saw the bird at the marsh Nov. 7. Terry et al also saw 3
WILSON'S SNIPE and a SONG SPARROW there while Kevin Barker observed 1
WILSON'S SNIPE there Nov. 7, but then saw 2 more along with a VARIED THRUSH
along Whiskey Creek in Banff on Nov. 9. Kevin saw a SONG SPARROW and a
GREEN-WINGED TEAL along Policeman Creek in Canmore, also on Nov. 8. Terry
Korolyk saw 3 AMERICAN COOTS, 3 EARED GREBES, and 2 HORNED GREBES at Pine
Coulee on Nov. 9.

A WESTERN MEADOWLARK, a GREAT BLUE HERON and 2 AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES were all
located by Terry Korolyk south of the 22X Bridge Nov. 8 while Dorothy
Johnston observed a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW in her yard in Marlborough on
Oct. 31. An extremely late migrant was an AMERICAN AVOCET seen by Terry
Korolyk at the dam at Pine Coulee Nov. 9 while Milt Spitzer reported a
BREWER'S BLACKBIRD along Hwy 1A west of Nakoda Lodge Nov. 7. Dick and
Lenora Flynn reported a possible hybrid AMERICAN WIGEON at the Harvie Bridge
at Carburn Park Nov. 2 while Doug Brittain of 14 Sunlake Way has had a pair
of NORTHERN SHRIKES around his home.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, November 13.

the adult THAYER'S GULL there along with the GLAUCOUS GULL, which has been
there since Oct 8, Terry observed a different adult THAYER'S GULL at the
same site on Thursday, Oct 23, but this bird may have been the one seen
there by Mike Mulligan on Oct 20. Mike Mulligan observed the FRANKLIN'S
GULL on Oct 25.

Tony Timmons found an extremely late migrating SPOTTED SANDPIPER where Fish
Creek joins the Bow River on Saturday, Oct 25. The same day Mike Mulligan

A female BLACK SCOTER has been seen at Glenmore Reservoir. The bird was
found on Wednesday, Oct 22 by Ray Wershler. It was on the south side of the
Reservoir near the Yacht Club. This site is off 90 Ave SW which runs west
from 14 St SW in Calgary.

The first year GLAUCOUS GULL that has been seen by many observers over the
past two weeks on 146 Ave
SE, south of the Shepherd landfill, was seen there again on Monday, Oct 20.
The bird appears at a man made pond which is actually a storm water
retention pond directly south of the landfill between 52 & 68 St SE. The
bird was first seen here on Oct 8 and on Oct 20 it was seen here separately
by both Terry Korolyk and Mike Mulligan. Mike Mulligan also reported an
adult THAYER'S GULL at the site on Oct 20.

There has been a change in address on the bird that was reported as a
possible COMMON POORWILL on the Oct 16 Bird Alert. Rather than being in
1100 block of 17 Ave NW as the Bird Alert was informed on that date, the
bird was really seen in the yard at 1727 12 Ave NW. Both Mary Roycroft and
Terry Korolyk visited this site on Wednesday, Oct 22 and did not see the
bird fitting Mary's original description. For more information on this bird
call Mary Roycroft at 278-2858. The address where the bird was seen was not
her home address.

Trudy Cope, who lives north and east of Crossfield, reported a lone male
EVENING GROSBEAK at her feeder at home on Saturday, Oct 18.

WESTERN GREBES are staging on Chain Lakes and Pine Coulee in the foothills
west of Nanton and Stavely respectively. Dick and Lenora Flynn reported
good numbers there Oct 23 and Terry Korolyk observed 35 WESTERN GREBES on
Chain lakes alone on October 19.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, Oct 27.

There have been no confirmed reports now since October 1 on the immature
CATTLE EGRET that has been west of Carseland. Dick and Lenora Flynn saw the
bird then at its usual locale a few kms south of the Hwys 24-22X junction.
At that point, a gravel road runs westward from Hwy 24 past some old rusting
metal tanks to a pale grey house on the north side of the road. The bird
has customarily been amongst cattle in the field to the south of the house
where the Flynns saw it on October 1, but has also been rumored to have been
at a slough by a nearby Agricore terminal. Don't open the gate if looking
for the bird at the first location. It's okay to go under the gate but the
landowner's property must be respected.

The first ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK of the Fall season has been seen in the Calgary
area. Michael Breiteneder observed a bird on Saturday, October 4 on RR 281
just north of Inverlake Rd north of Chestermere Lake. Terry Korolyk on
Sunday, October 5 observed an immature DARK-MORPH RED-TAILED HAWK
approximately 6 kms south of Hwy 22X on Hwy 773 south of Calgary. Terry saw
2 PRAIRIE FALCONS east of Calgary on October 3. One bird was 1 km south of
Chestermere Lake; the other bird flew off a transmission tower on Inverlake
Rd NE of Chestermere Lake. Kevin Barker observed an OSPREY at Upper
Kananaskis Lake in Peter Lougheed PP on Friday, October 3.

One SURF SCOTER was reported over the weekend. Terry Korolyk observed a
female or immature bird on the dam at the west end of Pine Coulee Reservoir
on October 5. Terry also saw 5 male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE there and on October
3 observed another 3 at Chestermere Lake. Pine Coulee is west of Stavely on
Hwy 527.

Andrew Slater saw 500 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and 250 SNOW GEESE in the
S/W corner of Namaka Lake on October 5. Namaka Lake is just southeast of
Eagle Lake which is the large lake visible from Hwy 1 just east of
Strathmore. Tony Timmons saw 25 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE at the
Cattleland Feedlots Slough which is in the N/E corner of the Hwys 817-564
junction north of Strathmore.

Dwight Knapik saw a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL being mobbed by other birds on
October 3 at Brown-Lowery PP which is on Plummers Rd which runs westward
from Hwy 22 a few kms south of the Hwy 22X junction.

Late migrating shorebirds over the weekend included a WILSON'S PHALAROPE at
the slough north of the Ardenode Community Hall seen October 3 by Terry
Korolyk and 5 AMERICAN AVOCETS seen by Terry east of Irricana on RR 254 just
south of Twp Rd 273, also on October 3. On October 5 Robert Worona saw 2
winter plumaged WHITE-TAILED PTARMIGAN on the Ptarmigan Cirque Trail in
Highwood Pass on Hwy 40.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, Oct 9.

An immature CATTLE EGRET has been seen once again at a site a few kilometres
west of Carseland. This most recent report comes from Dick and Lenora Flynn
who watched the bird on the morning of Wednesday, Oct 1. The bird was seen
by many observers last week but then disappeared for a couple of days. It
likes to follow a herd of cattle around as they feed. To reach the site
where the bird was seen Oct 1, approximately 4-5 kms south of the Hwys 24 &
22X junction on Hwy 24, a gravel road runs westward past some rusting old
storage silos to a pale grey house on the north side of the road. Stop at a
barbed wire gate on the south side of the road opposite the house; the bird
has been amongst the herd of cattle that feed in the field south of the
gate. Don't attempt to open the gate! It's okay to go under it, but
remember you are on private land so please respect the landowner's property.

There were no further reports this week on the CURLEW SANDPIPER,
SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER, and RUFF and REEVE that were reported last week at
Langdon Reservoir. Reports there this week included 15-20 AMERICAN GOLDEN
PLOVERS reported by Dick and Lenora Flynn on Oct 1, who also reported there
the same day a very late SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and 400-500 DOWITCHERS. On
October 1 Mike Mulligan reported a very late SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER. Joan
and Malcolm MacDonald observed AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS and a lone LEAST
SANDPIPER at the reservoir on Saturday, Sept 27.

Terry Korolyk observed a SWAMP SPARROW and a PALM WARBLER just south of the
boat launch at east Fish Creek Provincial Parks Hull's Wood area on Tuesday,
Sept 30, and Ted Bodnar observed a good concentration of 100-150 AMERICAN
PIPITS at the Twp Rd 251 and RR 232 junction about 2 kms northeast of the
Spri;ngbank Airport on Wednesday, October 1.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, Oct 6.
