Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was
recorded on Monday, Sept. 29 at 11:30am. To report a bird sighting,
leave a message after the recording or to bypass the recorded message, press
the pound key on your touch tone phone. To speak to a naturalist, please
phone 221-4500 during office hours.

There have been no reports on the CURLEW SANDPIPER found at Langdon
Reservoir Wednesday, Sept. 24 since Thursday, Sept. 25. The bird was seen
by only a few observers and it appears the juvenile SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER
seen there Sept. 24 was also gone by sometime on Thursday, Sept. 25. There
have been several sightings of RUFF or REEVE at the Reservoir since Wed.,
Sept. 24 when either a winter-plumaged or juvenile RUFF was first seen in
the northwest corner. The final reports came on Friday, Sept. 26 when Ian
Halladay et al saw a bird that was reportedly a RUFF in the northwest
corner. Later in the day, John Riddell observed a shorebird he described as
a REEVE on the eastern shoreline of the northwest corner. The CURLEW
SANDPIPER will probably be Alberta's second-only provincial record ever.

An immature CATTLE EGRET near Carseland was seen by many observers last
week, but was not seen at its original location by Mike Mulligan on Sunday,
Sept. 28 when he travelled to the area. The bird liked to feed amongst
cattle. Location of the bird when most people saw it was west of Carseland.
Approximately 4 kms south of Hwy 22X on Hwy 24, a gravel road runs westward
past some old rusting storage silos. The bird liked to forage amongst
cattle near a ditch on private land that ran south from a grey house which
is the first house on the road visible from Hwy 24. The man who first
reported the bird on Sept. 22 lives in the grey house.

The first SURF SCOTERS of the fall season have arrived in the Calgary area.
A flock of 12 female and/or immature birds were seen from the dam at
Chestermere Lake on Saturday, Sept. 27. The birds were seen by Terry
Korolyk.

A RED KNOT was reported at Langdon Reservoir on Sunday, Sept. 28. The bird
was seen by Andrew Slater. SANDERLINGS seen at Langdon Reservoir recently
included 5 seen Sept. 25 by John Riddell; then 3 by John on Sept. 26. Terry
Korolyk observed 2 there on Sept. 26 and Mike Mulligan reported 1 there on
Sept. 28.

Terry Korolyk observed an adult NORTHERN SHRIKE and 2 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS
at Langdon Reservoir on Sept. 26, and, with John Riddell, heard a SANDHILL
CRANE flying over the reservoir. John Riddell saw a PALM WARBLER there on
Sept. 26, and on Sept. 25 observed a juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK in the
shelterbelt just northeast of the reservoir. May? Weiss of northwest
Calgary reported a GREAT HORNED OWL being mobbed by Crows and Magpies in her
yard one day last week.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, October 2.

A SNOWY EGRET has been seen once again at Frank Lake east of High River.
The bird was seen on the east side of the lake on Sunday, September 14 by
Andrew Slater. This bird is probably one of the two SNOWY EGRETS that spent
much of the summer at Frank Lake. Frank Lake is a large lake on the south
side of Hwy 23 a few kilometres east of High River. To reach the southeast
corner access point, take the road heading south from Hwy 23 down the east
flank of Frank Lake. Turn right on the first 'Dead End' signed gravel road
heading westward. Drive past some houses until you reach the parking area
near the lake.

There have been no further reports on an adult GREAT EGRET seen in the
Irricana Sloughs in August. The bird was seen at sloughs both north and
west of the Range Road 254-Township Road 270 junction east of Irricana.

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE continues to be seen at the residence of Dough Mategio
at 34 Wildrose Street in the Rosedale Valley in Lacombe. Bill Wilson
observed the bird there at 9am on Saturday, September 13. Those interested
in seeing the bird can call Dough there at 1-403-782-3931.

Andrew Slater observed an AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER at Frank Lake on Sunday,
September 14. Andrew also observed 2 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS there the same
day as well as seeing a PRAIRIE FALCON and a lone WHITE-FACED IBIS.

An adult SABINE'S GULL was seen at Frank Lake on Sunday, Aug 24. The bird
was seen by Bill Wilson. Bill watched the bird from the southeast access
point of the lake - it was flying south to north when he saw it. Frank
Lake is a few kilometres east of High River on Hwy 23. To reach the
southeast corner access point, drive south from Hwy 23 on the road going
down the east flank of Frank Lake. Turn right onto the first 'Dead End'
gravel road you encounter and follow it to the lake.

Also on Sunday, Aug 24, Bill Wilson observed a juvenile RUDDY TURNSTONE at
Namaka Lake. Bill saw the bird along the southeast shoreline. To reach
Namaka Lake, drive east from Strathmore on Hwy 1. Very quickly you will
see a large lake on your right - this is Eagle Lake. Take the
road running southward past Eagle Lake on the east side. After passing
the south end of Eagle Lake, turn left onto a gravel road and shortly
you will be driving eastward past Namaka Lake, which will be to the south.
Take the road running past some residences on the east side, park
at the end and there will be a short walk to the southeast shoreline.

There was one SEMIPALMATED PLOVER report over the weekend. Terry Korolyk
observed an adult bird in the flats above the weir at Wyndham-Carseland PP
on Saturday, Aug 23.

Migratory passerines continue to arrive in the Calgary area. Recent
reports from Mallard Point in east Fish Creek PP include a MOURNING
WARBLER seen there by Bill Walker on Friday, Aug 22, and the same day,
observed there by Terry Korolyk were an immature BLACKPOLL WARBLER and an
EASTERN PHOEBE. At a Bucks for Wildlife slough north of Nightingale on
Aug 22, Terry Korolyk observed an OVENBIRD, 2 CANADA WARBLERS, 2-3
MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, 2 AMERICAN REDSTARTS and 6 WILSON'S WARBLERS amongst
other migrants. Nightingale is 4.8 kms east of the Hwys 817/564 junction,
north of Strathmore. To reach the slough, go north through Nightingale,
turn left onto the first westbound gravel road and drive a short distance.
Terry Korolyk had an immature CAPE MAY WARBLER and a CASSIN'S VIREO in his
back yard at his home in Calgary Shawnessy on Aug 22, and east of Irricana
just south of the RgeRd 254/TwpRd 273 junction, Terry observed a SAY'S
PHOEBE, also on Aug 22.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, Aug 28.

A BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER was seen at Mallard Point on the east side of Fish
Creek PP on Wednesday, Aug 20. The bird was seen by Terry Korolyk. Terry
reported that gusty wind conditions probably helped create conditions that
resulted in large numbers and varieties of small passerines to be at
Mallard Point on Aug 20. Between 11 and 11:45 am, in addition to the
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, Terry also saw 1 CANADA WARBLER, 5 MAGNOLIA
WARBLERS, 5 AMERICAN REDSTARTS, 5 WILSON'S WARBLERS, 3 NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSHES along with other species such as COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, and
TENNESSEE, YELLOW and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS. Terry also saw there 6
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, and with Al and Helga Borgardt observed up to 20
LEAST FLYCATCHERS. At Hull's Wood, off Bowbottom Tr in east Fish Creek
PP, on Tuesday, Aug 19, Terry observed an empid that may have been a
juvenile DUSKY FLYCATCHER. At Hull's Wood on Sunday, Aug 12, Nemali
Semiviratne watched 2 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS. At Hull's Wood on Aug 19,
Terry Korolyk reported TENNESSEE, YELLOW and YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLERS were most common, but NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH and WILSON'S WARBLERS
were also seen. Andrew Slater reported TENNESSEE WARBLER to be the most
common warbler at Pearce Estate, which is on the west side of the Bow
River just north of Blackfoot Trail, on the morning of Wednesday, Aug 20.
To reach Mallard Point, follow Canyon Meadows Dr eastward into Fish Creek
Park.

The Calgary Bird Alert has received a very unusual late Summer report.
Abndrew Sklater observed 6 female immature HARLEQUIN DUCKS in the rough
water below the weir at Pearce Estate in Calgary on the morning of
Wednesday, Aug 20.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, Aug 25.

Hummingbirds are on the move now in Fall migration in the Calgary birding
area. Three separate observers reported hummingbirds within the City in
the past week so far. Terry Korolyk observed a RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in his
garden in the Shawnessy area of Calgary on Thursday, Aug 7 and then on
Sunday, Aug 10, in the garden at her home in the Marlborough area of
Calgary, Molly Milne had 3 hummingbirds, which couldn't be identified. On
Monday, Aug 11, on the border of Edworthy Park at the Douglas Fir Trail,
Ann Jones reported a female CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD, a female RUBY-THROATED
HUMMINGBIRD and a male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD.

The most recent report on the SNOWY EGRETS and CLARK'S GREBES at Frank
Lake, E of High River, came from Bill Wilson. Bill observed there on
Wednesday, Aug 13, one of the SNOWY EGRETS; one of the CLARK'S GREBES,
feeding a juvenile; and a total of 11 WHITE-FACED IBIS. Go south from
Hwy 23 to the east side of the lake, turn right at the first 'dead end'
road and follow it to the lake.

The first migrant OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER in the area has been reported.
John Cartwright observed an individual on the south side of the Bow River,
W of the Crowchild Trail bridge, on Tuesday, Aug 12. On Sunday, Aug 10,
John observed a finch he believes may have been a female CASSIN'S FINCH
above Chester Lake in Kananaskis Country. For details, call John at
265-2980.

Other recent Fall arrivals for the area include an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER
reported at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary seen by an unidentified observer
on Friday, Aug 8; and on Sunday, Aug 10, also at the Bird Sanctuary and by
an unidentified observer, one PURPLE FINCH and one NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH.

Two adult CLARK'S GREBES, one of them feeding a juvenile, were observed at
Frank Lake, E of High River on Sunday, Aug 10. The birds were seen by
Andrew Slater, who said the birds were approx 400 yards south of the SE
corner access point. Andrew also reported one of the 2 SNOWY EGRETS that
have been seen at Frank Lake was approx 500 yards north of the SE corner
access point along the east shoreline. The other SNOWY EGRET was
apparently seen by a CFNS field trip on Aug 10 just off Hwy 23, which
bends around the north end of Frank Lake. Frank Lake is a few km
east of High River on Hwy 23. To reach the SE access point,
go south from Hwy 23 on the gravel road running down the east flank of
the lake. Turn right onto the first dead end road running towards
the lake. The road will go past some houses and reach a small parking area at
the SE corner of the lake.

The first WESTERN SANDPIPER of the Fall season has been seen in our
birding area. Terry Korolyk observed a juvenile along the NW shoreline at
the Cattleland Feedlot slough on Saturday, Aug 9. Terry also
observed a lone juvenile SEMIPALMATED PLOVER there, with the bird being
there again on Aug 10. Terry reported very good shorebirding in the area
over the weekend with the best sloughs being Langdon Corner slough, which
is just W of the Hwys 1 & 9 junction, and the large slough approx 2 miles
east of McElroy Slough on Inverlake Rd (which intersects where Hwy 1
bends around Chestermere Lake). Many other sloughs, however, had good
numbers and variety of shorebirds - for more locations, call Terry at
254-1878. Terry also observed 5 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS at Lake Macdonald,
which can be reached by driving north across Country Hills Blvd from
36 St NE and then approaching the old Turbo Refinery from the west. Those
birds were seen on Sunday, Aug 10. Cattleland Feedlots are just north of
the Hwys 564/817 junction, N of Strathmore. Be cautious of farm or
industrial machinery.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, Aug 14.

A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was seen and heard at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary
here in Calgary on the morning of Sunday, Aug 3. The bird was on the
opposite side of the lagoon from the Colonel Walker House when it was seen
by Ron Wawryn and Dave Brown and heard by Kim McCulley.

An AMERICAN BLACK DUCK has been reported by banders on the west side of
Frank Lake. The bird was banded by Canadian Wildlife Service biologists
on Tuesday, Aug 5, but the exact location isn't known.

The two SNOWY EGRETS at Frank Lake were still there as of Tuesday, Aug 5,
when they were observed by John Cartwright. The birds have been seen by
many observers now. To see them, go south from Hwy 23 on the gravel road
running down the east flank of the lake until you come to the first gravel
road running westwards towards the lake. This road will run past some
houses and approach the lake in the SE corner, which is where the birds
have been. Frank Lake is a few kilometres east of High River on Hwy 23.

Warblers are moving through the area now in fall migration. Calgary bird
banders banded a CAPE MAY WARBLER at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary on
Sunday, Aug 3, and on Monday, Aug 4, Terry Korolyk observed 5 TENNESSEE
WARBLERS and 2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS at the Bird Sanctuary.

SAY'S PHOEBES have been seen at the Calgary Zoo's private breeding ranch
off Dunbow Road. Dwight Knapik observed the species there on July 21,
July 29 and Aug 6. Dwight also observed a female COOPER'S HAWK capture a
SOLITARY SANDPIPER there on Aug 4.

Penny Smith observed an adult BALD EAGLE by the Crowchild Tr bridge on
Aug 3. There have been unconfirmed reports of BALD EAGLES nesting near or in
Edworthy Park this year.

Alan McKeigan observed 3 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS feeding by a pond in
the NW corner of the Beddington Tr/Deerfoot Tr junction on Tuesday, Aug 5.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, Aug 11.

A total of 2 SNOWY EGRETS have been seen at Frank Lake, E of High River.
Joan and Malcolm McDonald observed 2 birds there on Thursday, July 31.
The birds have been seen there by other observers now with the most recent
report being from Reid Barclay, who observed them on the evening of
Saturday, Aug 2. The first report of 2 birds there was on Thursday,
July 24. To reach the location of the birds, go south on the gravel road
that runs down the east flank of Frank Lake from Hwy 23. Go westward on
the first gravel road you come to. This is a "Dead End" road that goes
past some houses and ends up in the SE corner of the lake. Look for the
birds along the southern and eastern shorelines. They have been seen as
far as the weir in the dike visible to the north.

Observers visiting the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary may have a chance to see
Alberta's first probable YELLOW-THROATED VIREO. Local banders Steve Lane,
Gwen Smiley and El Peterson caught, banded and subsequently released a
bird that was probably a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO at the Bird Santuary on the
morning of Saturday, Aug 2.

A pair of terns that may have been LEAST TERNS were reported on an island
at Police Point Park in Medicine Hat on Friday, Aug 1. The birds were
reported by Ben Velner. Attempts to locate the birds since Friday have
proven unsuccessful so far. If the sighting can be confirmed, it would
probably be Alberta's first record of this species in the Province.

The first SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS of the Fall season have been seen in the
Calgary birding area. A total of 4 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS were seen at a
slough N of Strathmore on Sunday, Aug 3. The birds were observed by Terry
Korolyk and Reid Barclay. The slough was 7.4 km W of Hwy 817 on the
second east/west gravel road N of Strathmore.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, Aug 7.

A SNOWY EGRET was seen at Frank Lake east of High River on both Sunday, July
27 and Monday, July 28. The bird was originally found by Terry Korolyk at 2
p.m. July 27 and then was seen there again on July 28 by Mike Mulligan and
Jerry Pilny. The bird has been feeding along the southeast shoreline of
Basin 2 of Frank Lake. Basin 2 is the southern compartment of the Lake. To
reach the location of the sightings, travel east from High River on Hwy 23,
then drive south from Hwy 23 on the gravel road running down the east flank
of the lake. Travel a couple of kilometres to the first road running
westward to the lake which is 562 Ave. This is a "Dead End" road that will
travel past some houses and end up at the SE corner of Basin 2 of Frank
Lake. Frank Lake is very "reedy" this year. If the bird is still there it
may not be visible for the vegetation so spend some time walking and
watching.

A male INDIGO BUNTING was seen twice over the weekend at Police Point Park
in Medicine Hat. The bird has been there for approximately 3 weeks now.
Eric Tull and Brooke Clibbon saw the bird there at 9:00 a.m. July 26 and
Terry Korolyk watched the bird from 7:50 - 8:30 a.m. July 28. The bird is
always near the Visitor's Centre and likes to sing from dead trees directly
south of the parking lot. For more information on this bird, call Bob Frew
in Medicine Hat at 526-4573.

Other recent sightings of interest include 6-8 AMERICAN PIPITS, 2-3
GRAY-CROWNED ROSY FINCHES and a PINE GROSBEAK seen at Ptarmigan Cirque this
week. The birds were seen by Mary Huston and Lucille Harrison. Ptarmigan
Cirque is in Highwood Pass which is on Hwy 40 south of Kananaskis Country.

Andrew Slater heard a SPRAGUE'S PIPIT singing just south of the Irricana
Hutterite Colony on Sunday, July 27. The location is east of Irricana on RR
260 just north of Twp Rd 270

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, Aug 4.

A SNOWY EGRET was seen at Frank Lake on Sunday, July 27. The bird was seen
by Terry Korolyk. Terry watched the bird between 2:00 - 2:30 p.m.. He saw
it originally from the parking area in the SE corner of Basin 2 when it flew
from the east shoreline of Basin 2 to a dugout in Basin 3. It flew back to
the east shoreline of Basin 2 and was easily seen from the parking area
there when Terry left at 2:30 p.m.

Shorebirds are moving through the area in fairly good numbers now. Andrew
Slater reported a very unusual July shorebird that was probably a DUNLIN
which he observed at the large slough approximately 2 miles east of McElroy
Slough on Inverlake Road on Sunday, July 27. On Saturday, July 26, at the
same slough, Terry Korolyk observed 37 STILT SANDPIPERS, approximately 400
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 20 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 20 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 1
LEAST SANDPIPER and approximately 80 DOWITCHERS which included both
SHORT-BILLED and LONG-BILLED.

Other shorebird highlights from the weekend included 62 RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES at the Cattleland Feedlots Slough seen Saturday, July 26 by Terry
Korolyk and probably a total of approximately 600 WILSON'S PHALAROPES seen
in total at various sloughs east of Calgary by Terry the same day.
Richard Clarke reported approximately 500 shorebirds mostly LESSER
YELLOWLEGS and 6 STILT SANDPIPERS were flushed by a PEREGRINE FALCON in the
SE corner of Frank Lake on Thursday, July 24.

Richard Clarke observed 4 WHITE-FACED IBIS at the south end of Frank Lake on
July 24 while Terry Korolyk observed 3 there on July 27 and also saw 5
BLACK-NECKED STILTS there. Tony Timmons confirmed BLACK-NECKED STILTS
breeding at Sadler's Slough. He observed 2 adults with 2 juvenile on the
west side on July 27.

Kevin Barker observed 6-8 BLACK SWIFTS flying over the Bow River opposite
the Banff National Park East Gate on Saturday July 26.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, July 31.

A TURKEY VULTURE was seen south of Longview on Tuesday, July 22. The bird
was seen by Joyce Moore. The location of the sighting was approximately 10
kms south of Longview on Hwy 22 and approximately 2 miles westward. Joyce
said she was riding with other people on private land at this location and
the bird followed them westward as they rode. This is at least the fifth
report of the species in the area this year. The first bird was seen in the
Spring north of Nightingale which is north of Strathmore. Subsequently,
there have since been two sightings from the Weaselhead area of North
Glenmore Park in Calgary, and the most recent report, up until July 22, was
a bird seen over Beaverdam Flats in Calgary by Gus Yaki and Aileen Pelzer.

While shorebirds have started their fall migration from the north, there
have been few Calgary area reports recently. The only report this week was
3 unidentified DOWITCHERS and a single SOLITARY SANDPIPER seen at the large
slough in the southwest corner of the Hwys 2 and 22 junction on Wednesday,
July 23. Those birds were seen by Terry Korolyk. The same day, Terry also
observed 2 BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES and a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH at an unusual
locale. They were perched on telephone wires at the junction of Sheriff
King Road and Sheriff King Street just south of Hwy 22X.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, July 28.

A TURKEY VULTURE was seen over Beaverdam Flats in Calgary on Tuesday, July
8. The bird was observed by both Gus Yaki and Aileen Pelzer. Gus said the
bird was flying at a very high altitude. This is at least the 4th report of
this species in the Calgary birding area since the Spring. One bird was
just north of Nightingale north of Strathmore in the Spring and there were
two 2 separate reports later from the Weaselhead area of North Glenmore Park
in Calgary.

A pair of adult BLACK-NECKED STILTS have probably nested at Sadler's Slough
which is west of Strathmore. Bob and Linda Heidemann observed the pair this
week, acting very aggressively toward them, on the west side of the gravel
road approximately 2/3 of the way north of the Trans-Canada Highway towards
the first farm. Previously this summer 2 other broods of young with adults
were observed at the Cattleland Feedlots Slough which is north of Strathmore
in the northeast corner of the Hwys 564 & 817 junction. A seemingly lone
adult has been spending the season west of Hwy 9 on Twp Rd 252 a little
under a kilometre west of RR 273.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, July 14.

A bird that may have been a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER was heard singing in Bow
Valley Provincial Park on Monday, June 30. The bird was heard by both Kevin
and Marion Barker who spent a "long time" listening to the bird sing. The
bird was near an aspen grove by the Kananaskis River approximately 1/2 mile
from the parking lot of Flowing Water Trail. For more specific directions
to the bird, call Kevin in Canmore at 678-6102.

A large raptor that may have been an immature BALD EAGLE may have attempted
to seek refuge from Saturday's bad weather by perching near the top of a
large tree in the Whitehorn residential area in Calgary. The bird was seen
by Valerie Helbak who reported the bird stayed there approximately 4 hours.

HOUSE FINCHES continue to be reported in the Varsity area of Calgary. The
species has been resident in that particular subdivision for the past few
years. Lynn Ross is the most recent person in Varsity to report HOUSE
FINCHES. She has had a pair at feeders in her yard in Varsity Village for
about one week.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, July 10.
