This Bird Alert was recorded on Monday, Sept. 29 at 11:30am. To report a bird sighting, leave a message after the recording or to bypass the recorded message, press the pound key on your touch tone phone. To speak to a naturalist, please phone 221-4500 during office hours. There have been no reports on the CURLEW SANDPIPER found at Langdon Reservoir Wednesday, Sept. 24 since Thursday, Sept. 25. The bird was seen by only a few observers and it appears the juvenile SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER seen there Sept. 24 was also gone by sometime on Thursday, Sept. 25. There have been several sightings of RUFF or REEVE at the Reservoir since Wed., Sept. 24 when either a winter-plumaged or juvenile RUFF was first seen in the northwest corner. The final reports came on Friday, Sept. 26 when Ian Halladay et al saw a bird that was reportedly a RUFF in the northwest corner. Later in the day, John Riddell observed a shorebird he described as a REEVE on the eastern shoreline of the northwest corner. The CURLEW SANDPIPER will probably be Alberta's second-only provincial record ever. An immature CATTLE EGRET near Carseland was seen by many observers last week, but was not seen at its original location by Mike Mulligan on Sunday, Sept. 28 when he travelled to the area. The bird liked to feed amongst cattle. Location of the bird when most people saw it was west of Carseland. Approximately 4 kms south of Hwy 22X on Hwy 24, a gravel road runs westward past some old rusting storage silos. The bird liked to forage amongst cattle near a ditch on private land that ran south from a grey house which is the first house on the road visible from Hwy 24. The man who first reported the bird on Sept. 22 lives in the grey house. The first SURF SCOTERS of the fall season have arrived in the Calgary area. A flock of 12 female and/or immature birds were seen from the dam at Chestermere Lake on Saturday, Sept. 27. The birds were seen by Terry Korolyk. A RED KNOT was reported at Langdon Reservoir on Sunday, Sept. 28. The bird was seen by Andrew Slater. SANDERLINGS seen at Langdon Reservoir recently included 5 seen Sept. 25 by John Riddell; then 3 by John on Sept. 26. Terry Korolyk observed 2 there on Sept. 26 and Mike Mulligan reported 1 there on Sept. 28. Terry Korolyk observed an adult NORTHERN SHRIKE and 2 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS at Langdon Reservoir on Sept. 26, and, with John Riddell, heard a SANDHILL CRANE flying over the reservoir. John Riddell saw a PALM WARBLER there on Sept. 26, and on Sept. 25 observed a juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK in the shelterbelt just northeast of the reservoir. May? Weiss of northwest Calgary reported a GREAT HORNED OWL being mobbed by Crows and Magpies in her yard one day last week. The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, October 2. The first report of 2 birds there was on Thursday, July 24. To reach the location of the birds, go south on the gravel road that runs down the east flank of Frank Lake from Hwy 23. Go westward on the first gravel road you come to. This is a "Dead End" road that goes past some houses and ends up in the SE corner of the lake. Look for the birds along the southern and eastern shorelines. They have been seen as far as the weir in the dike visible to the north. Observers visiting the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary may have a chance to see Alberta's first probable YELLOW-THROATED VIREO. Local banders Steve Lane, Gwen Smiley and El Peterson caught, banded and subsequently released a bird that was probably a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO at the Bird Santuary on the morning of Saturday, Aug 2. A pair of terns that may have been LEAST TERNS were reported on an island at Police Point Park in Medicine Hat on Friday, Aug 1. The birds were reported by Ben Velner. Attempts to locate the birds since Friday have proven unsuccessful so far. If the sighting can be confirmed, it would probably be Alberta's first record of this species in the Province. The first SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS of the Fall season have been seen in the Calgary birding area. A total of 4 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS were seen at a slough N of Strathmore on Sunday, Aug 3. The birds were observed by Terry Korolyk and Reid Barclay. The slough was 7.4 km W of Hwy 817 on the second east/west gravel road N of Strathmore. The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, Aug 7. Terry watched the bird between 2:00 - 2:30 p.m.. He saw it originally from the parking area in the SE corner of Basin 2 when it flew from the east shoreline of Basin 2 to a dugout in Basin 3. It flew back to the east shoreline of Basin 2 and was easily seen from the parking area there when Terry left at 2:30 p.m. Shorebirds are moving through the area in fairly good numbers now. Andrew Slater reported a very unusual July shorebird that was probably a DUNLIN which he observed at the large slough approximately 2 miles east of McElroy Slough on Inverlake Road on Sunday, July 27. On Saturday, July 26, at the same slough, Terry Korolyk observed 37 STILT SANDPIPERS, approximately 400 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 20 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 20 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 1 LEAST SANDPIPER and approximately 80 DOWITCHERS which included both SHORT-BILLED and LONG-BILLED. Other shorebird highlights from the weekend included 62 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at the Cattleland Feedlots Slough seen Saturday, July 26 by Terry Korolyk and probably a total of approximately 600 WILSON'S PHALAROPES seen in total at various sloughs east of Calgary by Terry the same day. Richard Clarke reported approximately 500 shorebirds mostly LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 6 STILT SANDPIPERS were flushed by a PEREGRINE FALCON in the SE corner of Frank Lake on Thursday, July 24. Richard Clarke observed 4 WHITE-FACED IBIS at the south end of Frank Lake on July 24 while Terry Korolyk observed 3 there on July 27 and also saw 5 BLACK-NECKED STILTS there. Tony Timmons confirmed BLACK-NECKED STILTS breeding at Sadler's Slough. He observed 2 adults with 2 juvenile on the west side on July 27. Kevin Barker observed 6-8 BLACK SWIFTS flying over the Bow River opposite the Banff National Park East Gate on Saturday July 26. The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, July 31. The location of the sighting was approximately 10 kms south of Longview on Hwy 22 and approximately 2 miles westward. Joyce said she was riding with other people on private land at this location and the bird followed them westward as they rode. This is at least the fifth report of the species in the area this year. The first bird was seen in the Spring north of Nightingale which is north of Strathmore. Subsequently, there have since been two sightings from the Weaselhead area of North Glenmore Park in Calgary, and the most recent report, up until July 22, was a bird seen over Beaverdam Flats in Calgary by Gus Yaki and Aileen Pelzer. While shorebirds have started their fall migration from the north, there have been few Calgary area reports recently. The only report this week was 3 unidentified DOWITCHERS and a single SOLITARY SANDPIPER seen at the large slough in the southwest corner of the Hwys 2 and 22 junction on Wednesday, July 23. Those birds were seen by Terry Korolyk. The same day, Terry also observed 2 BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES and a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH at an unusual locale. They were perched on telephone wires at the junction of Sheriff King Road and Sheriff King Street just south of Hwy 22X. The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, July 28.
