Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was
recorded on Monday, June 30 at 9:30am. To report a bird sighting,
leave a message after the recording or to bypass the recorded message, press
the pound key on your touch tone phone. To speak to a naturalist, please

A GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was both seen and heard at Griffith Woods on
Saturday morning, June 28. The observation was made by Robert Heidemann.
Robert found the bird approximately 200 metres along the first gravel trail
leading westward from the asphalt parking lot. For more details on the
bird, call Robert Heidemann at 286-2380. To reach Griffith Woods, go west
on Hwy 8 to 69 St. SW, turn left, go through the traffic circle, then turn
left.

As many as 2 SAGE SPARROWS were reported near Medicine Hat on either
Wednesday, June 18 or Thursday, June 19. The birds were seen by both Ben
Velner and Bob Parsons. Other birders have attempted to find the birds but
have thus far failed. To reach the location where the birds were seen, go
west on Hwy 41A from the Hwys 41 and 41A junction east of Medicine Hat.
Turn right onto the first range road west of the junction and drive a short
distance on it to where the road becomes somewhat of a dirt track. Go north
on the dirt track to approximately a point where there is a small grove of
trees on the right. This is the area where the birds were seen with other
sparrows reported in the area including BAIRD'S, GRASSHOPPER, and BREWER'S.
On Saturday, June 21 Mike Mulligan saw a male LARK BUNTING not far from this
site.

A KRIDER'S subspecies RED-TAILED HAWK was seen on Sheriff King Street south
of Hwy 22X south of Calgary on Sunday, June 29. The bird was seen by Terry
Korolyk.

Mary Huston saw 2 unidentified YELLOWLEGS at the Swalwell Dam on June 29 and
also the same day saw 2 LARK BUNTINGS on Range Road 231 near Carbon, while
Dwight Knapik, on June 26, reported 2 EVENING GROSBEAKS near the start of
the Foreign Grade Trail in Kananaskis Country.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, July 3.

The first southward-bound shorebirds have been seen this season in the
Calgary birding area. One GREATER YELLOWLEGS and a total of 4 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS were seen east of the city on Friday, June 20. The birds were
seen by Terry Korolyk . The lone GREATER YELLOWLEGS was with one LESSER
YELLOWLEGS approximately 1 km. west of Hwy 817 5.2 kms. north of the Golf
Course road at the north end of Strathmore, while a pair of LESSER
YELLOWLEGS were just east of Hwy 817 5.2 kms. north of the Golf Course
road. One LESSER YELLOWLEGS was .8kms west of Range Road 273 on Township
Road 252 west of Dalroy.

A hybrid male CINNAMON-BLUE-WINGED TEAL was seen north of Strathmore on
Friday, June 20. The bird was seen by Terry Korolyk. This was a bird
different from the individual seen by Terry west of Dalroy on June 13.
Other birds seen by Terry on June 20 included 2 pair of BLACK-NECKED STILTS
each with young at the Cattleland Feedlots Slough in the northeast corner of
the Hwy 817-564 junction north of Strathmore, and a lone BLACK-NECKED STILT
.81 km west of Range Road 273 on Township Road 252. Terry observed 10
BONAPARTE'S GULLS on the slough west of Railway Slough in the Irricana
Sloughs on June 20 - those birds are probably oversummering.

On Sunday, June 22, Terry Korolyk observed a VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW feeding
over the Elbow River off Hwy 66 west of Bragg Creek. The bird was seen off
the viewpoint .4kms west of the Beaver Flat Campground Road junction.
Please exercise good birding ethics there as the bird may be breeding.

A SAGE SPARROW has been reported twice since the end of May near Medicine
Hat and a SAGE THRASHER has been seen by at least two observers recently
southeast of Manyberries. Observers interested in details on these birds
can call Terry Korolyk in Calgary at 254-1878.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, June 26.

Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was
recorded on Thursday, June 19 at 12:25pm. To report a bird sighting,
leave a message after the recording or to bypass the recorded message, press
the pound key on your touch tone phone. To speak to a naturalist, please
phone 221-4500 during office hours.

A GREAT EGRET has now been seen by a few people at Lake Bonavista in the
city of Calgary. The bird was first seen by Dave Reid? at the lake on
Sunday, June 8 and then was seen everyday there by Hurt Milc? up until
Sunday, June 15. Sheila Rayer? saw the bird there on the evening of Sunday,
June 15, then watched the bird there for 1.5 hours early on Monday, June 16,
then watched it again later in the afternoon and evening. Those are the
only reports to this point of the bird. There are viewpoints of the lake at
the Shopping Centre in the northeast corner of the lot and in the northwest
corner of the lake 2 km. west of the Shopping Centre on Lake Bonavista
Drive. The bird has been described as "active" but seems to have been most
prominent between the island and the west shoreline.

HOUSE FINCHES continue to spread within the City of Calgary. Karen Perlette
in Lake Sundance has reported she had a pair of HOUSE FINCHES around her
home for approximately 10 days now. HOUSE FINCHES were reported in
Midnapore last year and have gradually spread to other parts of Calgary from
their original locations in Varsity, North Haven and Marlborough when they
were first reported in the city a few years ago.

There have been many reports of CHUKAR PARTRIDGE in the area in recent
weeks. These reports are probably those of birds that have escaped from
private collections as the bird never really got established as an
introduced species.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, June 23. Thank you
for calling the City of Calgary and the CFNS Bird ALert. Leave your bird
sightings after the beep or call 221-4500 if you have any enquiries about
our local wildlife, or if you wish to report an injured bird or animal.

Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was
recorded on Thursday, June 12 at 6:50pm. To report a bird sighting,
leave a message after the recording or to bypass the recorded message, press
the pound key on your touch tone phone. To speak to a naturalist, please
phone 221-4500 during office hours.

A SEMIPALMATED PLOVER was seen at a slough east of Calgary on Wednesday,
June 11. The bird was seen by Bill Walker. Bill said the bird was at a
slough just north of Heatherglen Gold Course. The road runs along the west
flank of Heatherglen and the slough is on the east side of that road. This
would probably be a very late northward-bound migrant.

A COMMON NIGHTHAWK was seen at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in Calgary on
Thursday, June 5. The bird was seen by Shonna Macleod and Steve Lane. This
is the only report of this species in the area thus far this year. Last
year, nighthawks were unusually common in the Calgary area with numerous
observations including locations such as Edworthy Park, Calgary Shawnessy,
McKnight Blvd and Deerfoot Trail junction, south of Bragg Creek, and the
Votier's Flats area of west Fish Creek PP. Recent years also have seen
reports from the Hwy 68 - Jumpingpound Forest Demonstration Road area.

Male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE were at 2 very unusual locales on Friday, June 6. A
total of 7 were found near the airport by Terry Korolyk. Three were on
Goose Lagoon which is in the southwest corner of the 36 St NE - 80 Ave
junction, and the other 4 were on a slough past the first farm on the west
side of 36 St NE north of Country Hills Boulevard. This species was also
fairly widespread in foothills south and west of Calgary this spring.

A GREAT BLUE HERON was observed with a possible unusual prey item in its
bill on Monday, June 9. Ted Bodner observed the bird at a pond at the
northeast corner of the Old Banff Coach Road - Hwy 1 junction. Ted said the
bird had a BREWER'S BLACKBIRD in its bill, but didn't know if the heron had
killed it, or had picked it up as carrion.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, June 16.

the species in the area thus far this year. Other generally reliable sites
for seeing the species the past couple of years have been Langdon Reservoir
and the Irricana Sloughs.

A total of 6 WESTERN KINGBIRDS were seen in east Fish Creek PP over the past
weekend of May 31 and June 1. The birds were seen by Nemali Semiviratne
under the Hwy 22X Bridge. WESTERN KINGBIRDS were seen in this area last
year as well and were also seen further downriver at Policeman's Flats which
is at the end of 40 St. SE off Dunbar Road.

There were reports of SPOTTED TOWHEES in the area on May 31. Terry Korolyk
observed a bird singing in North Glenmore Park on the south-facing slope of
the "L" parking area while Jim Black and Gary Tomasson reported Towhees at 2

photographed a lone adult Sabine's Gull on a slough in the southwest corner
of the Hwy 22X-88 St SE junction.

A GREAT EGRET was seen on the east side of Hwy 2 just south of Nanton on

Jack Nodwell property near Carseland on Sunday, June 6. For a chance to see
these birds, or for more details, call Gus in Calgary at 243-2248.

For the second time this year, a TURKEY VULTURE has been seen in the
Weaselhead area of Glenmore Park. Jim St. Laurent who saw the first bird
there May 13, saw it or another while leading a CFNS Field Trip there on
Saturday, May 31.

A CASPIAN TERN was seen in the west end of Glenmore Reservoir on May 31 by
Terry Korolyk, and a 2nd year BROAD-WINGED HAWK was seen later that day by

A FULVOUS WHISTLING-DUCK found near the Calgary Airport by Ken and Chris
Havard on Sunday, May 25, has been seen by many observers. The location
of the original sighting was at a slough immediately north of a tree farm
in the northwest corner of the Country Hills Blvd / Barlow Trail junction.
The bird was said to be at a slough farther south of that later in the
week, but this in unconfirmed.

There have been no further reports to this point on a GREAT EGRET found
approx 16 km east of Okotoks on Sunday, May 25. Ian Halladay, Don
Magnasson, Dave Gibson and Bruce Barnetson all saw the bird at a dugout
in the SE corner of the 160 St / 306 Ave SE junction. The bird was seen
later that day at the north end of Blizzard Lake by Terry Korolyk, but
there have been no further reports since. Blizzard Lake is a few hundred
yards south of the dugout.

Both of these birds were recorded on the Calgary area May Species Count,
which was held on the weekend. The pair of WESTERN BLUEBIRDS nesting west
of Longview were also recorded on the Count. Other highlights of the
Count included a male EURASIAN WIGEON seen by Al Borgardt and Phil Cram a
couple of kilometres east of the Hwys 1 and 68 junction and a possible
BREWER'S SPARROW heard along the Big Hill Springs access road by Julie
Lefaivre and Mike Carter. Ian Halladay et al found 4 WHITE-FACED IBIS at
Frank Lake on the Count and also reported a lone WHIMBREL. Joan and
Malcolm McDonald observed a SURF SCOTER, a GOLDEN EAGLE and a HOODED
MERGANSER near Cochrane. A total of 6 RED KNOTS - five were recorded
east of Calgary seen by Milt Spitzer and other observers; and
one KNOT seen by Ken and Chris Havard, Dick and Lenora Flynn and Mike
Mulligan. Peter Sherrington and Bill Wilson observed 16 HARLEQUIN DUCKS
in Kananaskis Country, and Terry Korolyk observed a GREAT GRAY OWL just
south of the first buildings south of the Hwys 549 / 762 junction,
west of Millarville.

Other sightins of interest include a SANDHILL CRANE seen by Dwight Knapik
at the Calgary Zoo's private breeding ranch, off Dunbow Rd, S of Calgary,
on Wednesday, May 28.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, June 2.

A probable unprecedented birding situation for Alberta occurred at the Mt
Lorette Natural Area in Kananaskis Country. Two different rare species of
SWIFT have been seen at one location on the same day. Peter Sherrington
observed a single WHITE-THROATED SWIFT at Mt Lorette on consecutive days,
Monday, May 12, and Tuesday, May 13; but on May 13, Peter also observed
a VAUX'S SWIFT! For more information on these birds, call Bill Wilson in
Calgary at 230-0054.

A pair of WESTERN BLUEBIRDS have been seen by a few observers now at a
site west of Longview. The birds are nesting on a bluebird trail and have
been at this location since May 1. To see the birds, drive west from
Longview on Hwy 541 to the Eden Valley Reserve Rd junction and then watch
within the first 100 m west of that junction. Remember the birds have
been nesting here and cannot be approached or disturbed!

A TURKEY VULTURE was seen in the Weaselhead area of Calgary as it moved
westward over the 37 St SW parking area. This is the second record of
this species in our birding area already this season.

A hummingbird thought to be a female RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was
observed in Redwood Meadows by Sana(?) Simpson on Monday, May 12; and the
second BROAD-WINGED HAWK of this season was a bird seen at Bowmont Park by
Horst Grothman and other members of a CFNS Field Trip on Saturday, May 10.

A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was reported at an abandoned farm site 4 km east of
Bruce Lake in the Irricana sloughs on May 9. The bird was seen by Simone
Marler, who also saw a ROSS'S GOOSE at Frank Lake, May 11.

A GREAT GRAY OWL was seen 'behind Strathcona Drive' in Calgary this week.
The report was made by Don and Joyce Glover. This is probably the same
bird that has been periodically reported in the Strathcona/Christie Ravine
since Fall 2002.

There have been many recent Spring arrivals. Jim St Laurant saw a
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary on May 10, while Marg
Korolyk heard a CHIPPING SPARROW in Calgary Shawnessey on May 11, and
Dwight Knapik reported a CLAY-COLOURED SPARROW at the Calgary Zoo Ranch
also on May 11. An unidentified observer reported a WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW at IBS on May 12. Also on May 12, Jerry Pilny found BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVERS near Langdon and also found 2 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, some STILT
SANDPIPERS and CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS at Wolf Lake, east of Hussar.
Jerry also saw a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK there and saw a BLACK-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERON at Namaka Lake. Simone Marler saw a flock of 20-30 CEDAR
WAXWINGS in the Brentwood district, May 10, but these may be overwintering
birds or spring migrants.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, May 19.

A small greyish owl with prominent ear tufts that may have been a SCREECH
OWL was seen at extremely close range in a yard in the Pineridge district of
Calgary between 8:00 - 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22. The bird was seen by
Pat Spiller. This would be an extremely rare bird in Alberta. For details
on this sighting, call Pat Spiller in Pineridge at 285-9898.

A large pale gull that was probably a 1st year THAYER'S GULL or possibly
even a 1st year GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL was seen briefly the afternoon of
Sunday, April 27, on a small pond just south of the Shepard landfill site.
The bird was observed by Terry Korolyk who said the bird flew towards the
landfill after he was only able to watch it for a few seconds with the aid
of a spotting scope used from 146 Ave SE.

Shorebirds arrived in moderate numbers over the weekend. Jeff Bank observed
a MARBLED GODWIT above the Carseland Weir on Thursday, April 24, while Terry
Korolyk observed a WILLET at McElroy Slough on Monday, April 28. AMERICAN
AVOCETS and GREATER AND LESSER YELLOWLEGS were all seen in the Calgary area
over the weekend. The largest flock was probably 152 LESSER YELLOWLEGS
observed by Terry Korolyk on 72 St SE just south of 146 Ave on April 28.

Two YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS seen at Wyndham-Carseland Provincial Park on
Thursday, April 24, were the first of the Spring. They were seen by Jeff
Bank. Jeff also found 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS at east Fish Creek PP Hull's
Wood area on Sunday, April 27. Terry Korolyk reported several flocks of
BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS east of Calgary on April 28. This included a total of
28 birds at Chestermere Lake. Terry also saw an EARED GREBE at Chestermere
Lake on April 28, while Dorothy Johnston had a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK in her
yard in Marlborough on April 26 or 27.

The April 26 snowstorm had 4 or 5 MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS seeking shelter in
Sarah Brickett's yard in Sierra Morena Terrace while on April 22 April
Skenes saw a raptor she thought to be a PRAIRIE FALCON eating a Rock Dove in
the Killarney area of Calgary near 17 Ave SW.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, May 1.
