A flock of 5 SWANS was reported flying southward along the Bow River between Deerfoot Trail and the river in the Southland Drive junction area on Monday, February 24. The birds were observed by Richard Rappel. The birds could not be identified as to species. For more details on this report, call Richard Rappel in High River at 601-4512. A female NORTHERN CARDINAL that has been coming to a residence near Blackfalds, Alberta since Feb. 1 has been enjoyed by many observers now. The bird appears daily at the home of Darcy and Karen Gabert. Those interested in seeing this bird can call Darcy or Karen Gabert near Blackfalds at 1-403-885-4076. The most recent location of the female LONG-TAILED DUCK that has been overwintering in southeast Calgary was on the Bow River near the pedestrian bridge just upstream from the Burnsmead parking area of Fish Creek PP on Sunday, March 2. The bird was seen there by Cedric Hitchon. An AMERICAN DIPPER was seen along the Bow River south of the Hwy 22X Bridge on Friday, Feb. 28. The bird was reported by Gus Yaki and other members of a CFNS Field Trip. Gus Yaki et al observed an immature female COOPER'S HAWK on the Elbow River Birding Survey in Calgary on Saturday, March 1. Joyce and Don Moore observed a NORTHERN GOSHAWK perched on a post at 562 Ave & 32 St W west of High River, also on Saturday March 2, and the same day found a concentration of 8 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS in an 8 mile-long stretch of the Coal Trail east of Longview. It appears as though the CAPE MAY WARBLER that had been attempting to overwinter at the home of Lucille Dougherty at 835 - 8 St W in High River has probably not been successful in overwintering there. First reported there on Dec. 13, the bird has not been seen for about 3 weeks now. The Alberta Bird Records Committee currently has several more rare bird reports up for adjudication.
