| Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) | |
The Painted Lady is a spectacular medium sized butterfly, often found in sandy areas. Found in 1998. Butterfly watchers are likely to find them if they look in the appropriate habitat. Shown on the right is the underside of the Painted Lady - note the four spots on hindwing submarginal area. |

| American Lady (Vanessa virginiesis) | |
The American Lady is a similar to the Painted Lady, but it can be easily identified by remembering the following: "American Ladies have big eyes." I got this information from the "Butterflies Through Binoculars - The East" refernece guide. It is a great book for learning and identifying butterflies. Shown on the left is the topside of the American Lady - note the spots on hindwing tend to be smudgy and at times run together, whereas the spots on the Painted Lady in the same area are black and distinct. . |
