Variegated Fritillary
(Euptoieta claudia)

The Variegated Fritillary is a migrant in southern Ontario in late summer. Jim Fairchild photographed this one in 1999 in Scarborough Onatrio. The upperside of the Variegated Fritillary has black spots around submargin of both hindwing and forewing. The overall topside is considerably lighter than similar fritillary species of Fritillaries.

The underside wing pattern of this fritillary (pictured below) is mottled with pale median and marginal patched on its hindwing.

(Everes comyntas)

The Eastern Tailed-Blue is a very common small butterfly found flying close to the ground throughout the spring, summer and fall. It has a small tail and two to three orange spots on both the upper and bottom side of its hindwings. The topside is typically darker than similar Spring and Summer Azures.
