Eastern Pine Elfin photo by Jim Fairchild
Eastern Pine Elfin
(Callophrys niphon)

Eastern Pine Elfin is the same size as a banded hairstreak with stunning banding of rich reddish-brown and black. Found most often in pine barrens, and mixed deciduous woods with groves of white pines. Of the few reference books I have, I was unable to find one that showed the upperside of this species.
