    New Ontario Butterfly Conservatory

    - Fri, 16 Feb 2001

I wanted to let you know that "Wings of Paradise" opened on January 27th here in Ontario. John Powers is a former police officer and a very successful entrepreneur. He has studied butterflies for 40 years and built up an internationally renowned collection of insects and butterflies that toured around malls and other areas in the province ("Flying Jewels"). John's dream was to build and create an indoor and outdoor butterfly environment where visitors could see and learn about live butterflies. He put together a business package and raised $3.5 million to build Wings of Paradise. John is curator. Located on 117 acres, it has a 10,000 square-foot butterfly house and 15,000 feet of display rooms, classrooms, a cafe and gift shop. In the glass domed conservatory, some 2000 butterflies of 30 or more species fly.

John has a strong interest in the monarch butterfly and holds a Monarch Day in the fall (see website for details. click on the monarch butterfly). He once tagged a few monarchs using my old Urquhart-type tags and had a recovery from Mississippi. He might be interested in promoting The Monarch Watch programs, merchandise, etc. John sells some beautiful monarch butterfly sweat and t-shirts.

Wings of Paradise is located about 85 miles west of Toronto at Cambridge, and is open 7 days a week from 10 am to 5 pm. The website is www.wingsofparadise.com. The e-mail address is: info@wingsofparadise.com. Phone number is (519) 653-1234.

John holds a Guinness record for finding the largest owlet moth.

An article on the conservatory appeared on Feb. 14th, on page 45 of The Toronto Sun.

    TEA Book & BC update

    - Fri, 30 Jun 2000

    Hello Everyone,
First a new Butterfly Count listing:

    Sunday July 9
    HALIBURTON BUTTERFLY COUNT
Contact is Ed Poropat (705)457-3018 edporopat@halhinet.on.ca

    Now some book news:

    A World for Butterflies
    - Phil Schappert
    - you can get autographed copies from Phil www.aworldforbutterflies.com (cost is $35 USD ($25 plus $1.60 for packaging and $8.40 for 4-7 day delivery shipping).
    - I have ordered extra copies from Chapters on-line and plan to have them available et TEA meetings

    Papillons du Quebec
    - Louis Handfield
As well as the Scientific Version covered by the flyer which came with your Ontario Insects, there is a softcover Popular Edition. The $90. hardcover edition is about 3 inches thick and has the 122 plates loose in a pocket. The $50. softcover is still a hefty book, but has the plates bound in. It covers all the butterflies, including strays like the Peacock (!?) and over 1300 moths, with photographs showing species variations.

I've ordered extra copies from www.indigo.ca at a 10% discount so I can pass them on to members. A good deal at $38.50, even if it is in French!

    Dragonflies Through Binoculars
    - Sidney W. Dunkle
I have received varying reports about the status of this eagerly-awaited book. It is listed on www.chapters.ca at 20% off, but the general consensus is that it will not be available until the end of July. I ordered several anyway and hope to have it and the Dragonflies of Wisconsin at TEA meetings.

I hope you have a great long weekend, Counting butterflies or just enjoying them

    Carolyn King
    Toronto Entomologists' Association

p.s. If you are in the Toronto area and have a supply of Pearly Everlasting, perhaps you could provide a home to some American Lady caterpillars who are rapidly running out of food!
